I was riding down the road, blasting my favorite song which was and still is Needles and Pins by Deftones, then I came to a red light, stopped as usual, and then set off again once it turned green. Out of nowhere, the big, black, and tinted windowed Ford F150 decided to completely ignore me, and swerve over in the middle of the intersection, and then my lane, where I was then sideswiped. My poor baby Steve, which is what I named my car, was completely dented, smashed, and anything possibly imaginable on my passenger side. What could’ve been an avoidable accident and traumatizing experience is something that unfortunately happened to me. However, it opened my eyes to the importance of safe driving and knowing my surroundings when driving. Prior to the accident, I was headed to the gym and where I was meeting my best friend. It was a very chilly and windy December afternoon, when I approached an intersection turning into a red light. As I proceeded to the light and stopped, I noticed the huge Ford F150 sitting right next to me. It was massive, I assumed it was someone's project truck by the way their tinted windows looked nearly illegal and it was lifted way too high off the ground. Quite frankly, I thought it looked a bit ridiculous but I don’t care too much about someone else's truck. So I just proceeded to listen to my favorite song. Shortly after, the light turned green and everyone was on their way. In what felt like not even a second, the Ford F150, without a turning signal or any indicators, decided to change lanes mid intersection, slamming right into me, and my vehicle. The impact was rough, sending adrenaline through my body and the worry of what just happened clouded my head. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, except my precious car. My poor Steve. The incident left a lasting impression on me. It made me realize that a single moment of carelessness can have consequences, and that the safe driving I learned in drivers ed. was actually extremely important.
Changing lanes mid intersection is not only illegal, or has some law preventing it, but especially during heavier traffic it becomes very unsafe. It endangers not only the driver who changes lanes, but also regular civilians like myself in that situation. Actions like these can cause severe injuries, permanent disabilities, or even fatalities. The emotional and financial burdens that will always occur and are rooted from accidents can be overwhelming for both the victims and the responsible party. The present and future consequences go beyond the incident, affecting families, communities, and everyone else involved.
This incident drilled the significance of safe driving practices into my brain. Firstly, it is crucial to always obey traffic laws, including respecting traffic signals and signs. There are completely blocked out white lines as soon as you get near an intersection for a reason. The difference between solid and dotted lines are not there just for looks, but for safety. Secondly, maintaining focus while driving is extremely important. Cell phones, eating, daydreaming, or any distraction can divert attention from the road, increasing the chances of an accident. Thirdly, maintaining a safe following distance and following speed limits allows for better reaction time and control in unexpected situations. Recognizing the lives of everyone around you is crucial. Being mindful of their presence and giving them space demonstrates responsible driving behavior. Driving techniques, such as scanning the road, anticipating potential hazards, and signaling intentions, can help prevent accidents.
If that accident didn’t happen, I’m not sure if I would be as cautious as I am now. I never truly realized the impact that safe driving has for everyone and everything.
