Driver's Education is a class to teach individuals the knowledge and skills to become a safe and accountable driver. In Virginia, it is required for individuals under the age of 18 to take it. This course is so important because it reduces the likelihood of accidents and provides responsible driving habits. I believe that all drivers, regardless of age or location, should be required to retake driver education every two years. This would update and refresh people's minds on traffic laws and regulations. This will definitely help decrease the number of deaths of innocent lives.
According to reports, in America an average of 34,000 people die each year due to driving. This is more people who have died in one year than the total number of American soldiers who have died from war in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is so devastating and it shouldn't be like this. We must find ways to decrease this number. While we have the normal standards of raising awareness such as wearing our seat belts, following traffic laws, and refraining from using phones. However, those are good but I believe there are additional steps we can take to save more people's lives. Such as bringing more attention to technological advancements, practicing defensive driving more, improved infrastructure, and implementing distraction detentions. This can definitely help, but we also need to have stricter enforcement and penalties for drunk driving, speeding, and other risky behaviors. As a driver, I often see people speeding and driving recklessly without being pulled over quickly. That worries me because someone's life can be taken in just a blink of an eye due to these actions. I don't claim to be the best driver, but I'm a very cautious driver. Something I need to improve is remembering to adjust accessories like mirrors, seats, and even my glasses before driving. Trying to adjust those things while driving is super dangerous. For instance, I once tried to adjust my seat while driving and ended up swerving into the other lane, thankfully no one was right there. We all have something we can work on to be better drivers. This is your time to go and learn more!
A car accident can happen so quickly one minute you're doing something and the next you're struck by another vehicle. Personally, I have never been in a car accident. However, two years ago my grandma and my cousins were involved in a bad one. I will never forget the day I received a call from my mom informing me of the accident. My heart just stopped as me and my other family members rushed to get to them. When we arrived, I felt like a dark cloud was weighing me down. Seeing my family in that state was just a huge nightmare. My two cousins were a little bangeed up. My grandma was the most seriously injured. They said she had a seizure when I saw her on the stretcher, I couldn't help but cry. This all happened because someone decided to speed down the road, ignoring my grandma's right of way. Thank God my grandma was able to come home the same day. I'm still glad the people inside the car that hit my family were safe too. My grandma and two cousins could have been taken in just a blink. This is why it is crucial that reckless drivers need to be stopped and more harsh consequences need to be made now!
In conclusion, driver education is so important there is never too much to learn about it. We lose too many people daily due reckless driving or forgetting rules. It is key that we follow and have great understanding of the laws and spread awareness constantly. Reckless driving and having a lack of understanding of the rules is not worth someone's life. Someone's life can change forever in a blink of an eye. Which can leave family members in a nightmare for the rest of their lives. Let's start bringing more awareness today no one deserves to die!
