It is important for people to take the driver’s education before getting behind the wheel. The driver’s education is meant to teach new drivers the importance of following speed limits, knowing the street signs, being aware of your surroundings while driving and being courteous for the drivers around you. Not only that, but driver’s education provides information that prepares you for situations in case of emergencies. Knowing how to act quickly in these situations may help prevent you from getting in a car accident. One step that can be taken from reducing the number of deaths related to driving could be knowing where all the mechanism factors are located in your car before you start driving; this includes the turn signs, headlights and emergency lights, the parking brakes, the windshield wipers, and the defrosters. You should also check your mirrors beforehand as well to ensure that they are in a position that would help you see what the traffic looks like from behind. Doing these actions prior to driving may help in ensuring your safety while you are driving since you know where everything is located when you need to use it. Another step that you can take while driving would be to know the basic driving maneuvers; this includes entering and leaving traffic, right and left turns, lane changes and turning the car around. Knowing how to control your car during these maneuvers is a key factor in making sure you keep yourself safe and the drivers around you safe. I have only been in one minor car accident while I was with my family. We were going straight on an intersection and the light had been green for us, so we had the right-of-way. You would assume that since it was legal for us to move forward, we wouldn’t be caught in an accident. Unfortunately, while we were passing through, someone was making a right turn into our lane and didn’t correctly assume the time frame they would have to be able to pass safely. After the collision my parents had turned back to make sure myself and my sisters were fine and that none of us had any signs of some major injuries. The accident came as a real shocker for me since I was not expecting to have been caught in an accident, especially since it appeared safe for us to move forward since our light was green. The accident taught me that even though it appears to be safe to drive, you never know what could be happening around you. Because of this incident I was caught up in, a step that I want to take into consideration while I am driving to be a safer driver would be to always proceed with caution and not only while I am driving through an intersection. You can’t assume that because it appears to be safe to proceed, that means nothing can possibly go wrong. Proceeding with caution would help you stay aware of your surroundings so you can see what other drivers appear to be doing. Noticing what other drivers appear to be doing can help prepare me in what I am expected to do if something were to go wrong. With that being said, another step I will be doing while driving would be to never assume that another driver knows what they are doing, as well as never assume that they are aware of their surroundings. Because of this, I will take it as my responsibility to be aware of my surroundings and know what I am expected to do while driving. Being aware of my surroundings will help me stay alert of what another driver’s intentions are so I can be prepared for when they execute their movements. Finally, I want to be courteous for all drivers. I never know what is happening with the drivers I encounter on the road. So, because of that, being courteous of drivers may help in getting them to their destinations safely since I am not showing any sign of road rage. If they are the ones to experience road rage, I can help myself in not being caught in their road rage and help them out by not being the reason for their road rage to increase. It is important to know what is expected of you as a driver. This does not limit down to the knowledge of what the road signs are, or how to control your vehicle, but also to understand what should be taken into consideration since you are not the only person driving. Ensuring your safety while driving can also ensure the safety of others.
