In the Driver's Seat
2026 Driver Education Round 2

Driver education can help reduce deaths related to driivng by teaching people about dangerous situations before they experience them firsthand. New drivers need to understand the risks of speeding, texting, driving under the influence, following too closely, and while driving while tired or distracted. They also need to learn defensive driving and understand that they cannot control what other drivers do. A safe driver has to pay attention to the road, anticipate possible problems, and be prepared to react when another driver makes a mistake.
I have not personally been involved in a serious car accident, but I have seen irresponsible driving while working and traveling on the road. I have seen drivers speed, make sudden lane changes, follow too closely, and pay attetion to things other than the road. Seeing these things has made me more aware of how quickly a normal drive can become dangerous. Sometimes it only takes one bad decision for someone to lose control of a vehicle or put another person's life at risk.
Working in junk removal has also taught me that being in a hurry is never a good reason to drive recklessly. When I am working, there are jobs that need to be completed and customers who are expecting us to arrive on time. However, getting somewhere a few minutes faster is never worth putting myslef or someone else in danger. I would rather arrive safley than make a decision that could have consequences for the rest of my life. Having a job where I drive frequently has made safe driving something I think about every day, not just something I learned when I first got my license.
There are several things I can do to become a better and safer driver. The first is staying focused. I need to keep my phone away while driving and avoid unnecessary distractions. I always need to wear my seat belt, follow the speed limit, maintain a safe following distance, and pay attention to the drivers around me. I also need to recognize when I am too tired to drive safely. Since I often work physically demanding days, I understand that fatigue can affect my ability to react and make good decisions. If i am too tired, I need to slow down, take a break, or find anoher safe solution instead of trying to push through.
Another important part of being a safe is understanding that defensive driving does not mean assuming everyone else will follow the rules. It means being prepared for the possibility that they will not. If a driver suddenly changes lanes or stop unexpectedly, I need to have enough space and awareness to respond. Paying attention to mirrors, intersections, pedestrians, cyclists, road conditions, and other vehicles can make a major difference. Good driving is about constantly paying attention instead of becoming comfortable and careless.
I can also help other people become safer drivers by setting an example. If i have a passengers in my vehicle, I can show them that wearing a seat belt and staying focused should be normal. If I see a friend trying to text while driver or taking unnecessary risks, I can speak up instead of staying quite. Sometimes helping someone become a safer driver is as simple as reminding them that whatever they are doing on their phone can wait until they are no longer behind the wheel. I believe people are more likely to take saftey seriously when the people around them do the same.
Driver education is important because it gives people the knowledge to understand the consequences of their decisions, but education only works when drivers choose to use what they have learned. Getting a driver's license gives someone the ability to drive, but it also comes with responsibility to protect themselves and others.
Every time I get behind the wheel, I remind myself that I am not the only person on the road. There are families, workers, students, and people simply trying to get home safely. I cannot control every driver around me, but I can control my own choices. To me, being a good driver means understanding that getting to your destination quickly is neevr more important than getting there safely. A few seconds of impatience or distraction can have consequences that last a lifetime. Driver education helps people understand that responsbility before it is too late, and that is why I believe it is an important part of making our roads safer.
