In
the Driver’s Seat



My
Uncle partook in the parent-taught curriculum when he was learning to
drive. One night, he was called into work because other coworkers did
not arrive for their shift. Although he was drowsy, as it was late
into the night, he drove to work unaware of the risk involved. He
died that same night from falling asleep behind the wheel and
colliding with a road barrier. If he had learned of the risks
associated with driving with fatigue, or other circumstances that
could cause harm to him while driving, he might still be with us
today. 

It
is a known fact that when compared to traditional teaching methods,
drivers ed leads to fewer teenage casualties and more informed
drivers. Unlike traditional methods only teaching students about
mastering the mechanics of driving, drivers ed focuses on driver
safety as a primary teaching tool. Through this program, teenage
students are less likely to be involved in car crashes, or become
convicted, as opposed to parent taught courses. Furthermore, the
program discusses the various ways students can lessen the risks
caused by driving.

There
are several steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths
associated with driving; and all are outlined within drivers
education courses. These steps include not drinking while driving,
not being connected to cellular devices, not driving faster than the
posted speed limit, and maintaining an up to date knowledge of your
cars functions and driving regulations. While these seem intuitive,
they are less likely to be covered in traditional parent-taught
courses. However, these basic safety practices are a major part of
the drivers ed curriculum, and are a necessity to minimize the
risk that drivers experience.

I
believe it is the duty of every driver to become as safe on the road
as possible. To do this, we should all minimize distractions, whether
it be technology, alcohol, or music, while driving. When we reduce
these factors, we not only become safer drivers, but also make the
roads safer for others as well. The more informed we are about these
issues, the easier it will be to recognize these bad habits and make
adjustments before it’s too late. The best way to do this is
through drivers ed.
