In The Driver's Seat

I remember the days as a young child, fantasizing about getting my drivers licence and hitting the open road. All alone, nobody was able to tell me where I could go or when. While I imagined myself in the driver's seat the first thing that came to mind was freedom but responsibility should have been brought into my attention. When I first started studying to drive I was taught all the rules of the road but I was not told that that little card that fit in my wallet could hold that amount of responsibility.
Yes, driving should be fun and exciting but drivers ed is a must not only for teenagers but adults as well. Could you imagine if nobody taught us the rules of driving? Would you want to be driving next to someone on the road that was never taught the rules of the road? I am going to infer that the answer is no. Well the same scenario applies when you ask the question, “would you want to share a road with a driver who did not understand the responsibilities of driving”? Emphasizing the aspect of responsibility during this education would tremendously help the accident rates decrease. I am aware that accident rates can be scary to someone that is new behind the wheel but if nobody tells a beginner driver about these unfortunate accidents, they will not be too worried about preventing them.

I personally have witnessed my family members and friends practicing dangerous driving habits and I have started to pick up on them. In order to be a better driver not only for myself but as well as others I will understand that driving is a privilege not a must have. I will also ensure that everyone else around me knows this as well. We do not have to have the luxury of fast cars or a 5 minute drive to hang out with friends. Many people that came before us did not have this privilege and I think it is about time that this aspect starts to be incorporated into drivers ed courses. As individuals, we seem to care about something more if we realize that is privilege not a certainty. So why not teach this when we are teaching people the rules of the road?
