In the Driver’s Seat: The Importance of Safe and Educated Driving

Being in the driver’s seat is a serious responsibility. Every time a person gets behind the wheel, they are not only responsible for themselves, but also for passengers, pedestrians, other drivers, students, families, and the community. As a school bus driver and CDL trainer with Dearborn Public Schools, I understand that driving is not just about knowing how to operate a vehicle. It is about making safe decisions, staying alert, and respecting the lives around you. Driver education is important because it teaches people that driving is a privilege that comes with responsibility.
Driver education can help reduce the number of deaths caused by driving because it gives drivers the knowledge and habits they need before dangerous situations happen. A person may know how to start a car, turn, or park, but that does not always mean they understand defensive driving, distracted driving, school bus laws, speed control, or how quickly one bad decision can change lives. Good driver education teaches drivers to think ahead, scan the road, avoid distractions, follow traffic laws, and understand that being late or impatient is never more important than someone’s life.
One of the biggest problems on the road today is distracted driving. Many drivers look at their phones, text, scroll, eat, or focus on something other than the road. Even a few seconds of distraction can be dangerous. Speeding is another major issue. Some drivers do not realize that the faster they drive, the less time they have to react. Impatient driving is also a problem, especially near school buses, school zones, and student stops. As a school bus driver, I have seen drivers rush around buses, ignore stop signs, and continue moving even when students are loading or unloading. These choices can put children in danger.
I have had experiences that remind me why safe driving matters so much. One of my greatest fears as a bus driver is hearing that a student has been hit while getting on or off a school bus. Near the end of one school year, I remember hearing a driver call over the radio, sounding emotional and scared, asking for EMS because a vehicle had passed the bus stop sign and struck a student. That moment stayed with me because every bus driver understands that fear. When we stop the bus, turn on the flashing lights, and extend the stop arm, we trust other drivers to pay attention and follow the law.
I also see dangerous situations during my own routes, especially during early morning high school routes when it is still dark outside. Students may be walking from different directions, and drivers may be distracted, impatient, or looking at their phones. There have been times when I have already begun unloading students and a car continues moving past my bus. In those moments, my heart drops. I lay on the horn and teach my students to freeze because the horn means danger. These experiences show me that safe driving is not just about avoiding tickets. It is about protecting lives.
There are many steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. First, driver education should be taken seriously and not treated like something people only need to pass a test. New drivers should learn real-life safety situations, including how to respond near school buses, pedestrians, emergency vehicles, bad weather, and heavy traffic. Second, there should be stronger education about distracted driving. Drivers need to understand that a phone call, text message, or social media notification can wait. Third, drivers should be reminded often about the importance of slowing down, wearing seat belts, checking mirrors, keeping a safe distance, and staying calm on the road.
Enforcement is also important. Laws about speeding, distracted driving, and passing stopped school buses must be enforced to keep people accountable. Stop-arm cameras on school buses can help identify drivers who illegally pass stopped buses, especially when police officers cannot be at every bus stop. Public awareness campaigns can also help remind drivers that school bus safety laws exist to protect children. Communities, schools, families, law enforcement, and lawmakers all have a role in making roads safer.
As a CDL trainer, I can help others become safer on the road by teaching new drivers that safety starts before the bus even moves. Pre-trip inspections, mirror checks, proper braking, watching blind spots, scanning intersections, and staying focused are all part of safe driving. I can also continue teaching drivers to be patient and professional, even when other people on the road are not. A safe driver must be calm, alert, and prepared for the unexpected.
As a driver myself, I can continue to improve by staying focused, avoiding distractions, following traffic laws, and always remembering the responsibility I carry. I can also help students understand how to stay safe around the bus. When I teach my students to freeze when they hear my horn, I am teaching them that safety is a team effort. Drivers, students, parents, and communities all have to work together.
Being a safe driver means understanding that every decision matters. One careless choice can cause pain that lasts a lifetime, but one safe choice can prevent a tragedy. Driver education is important because it helps people understand that responsibility before it is too late. As a school bus driver and CDL trainer, I will continue doing my part to promote safe driving, educate others, and protect the people who share the road with me.
