Making a Difference on the Road

There are plenty of steps that can be used to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. Sure, law enforcement is a big one, but it isn’t up to only law enforcement to reduce deaths, it is up to the drivers of every single vehicle. One step is human beings need to not be under the influence of any sort of alcohol or drug. I feel that is one of the biggest areas of wrecks. Making sure to check blind spots, driving the speed limit, and not becoming distracted are the basics of driving. For beginners however, they should develop the right attitude about driving, get as much supervised practice as possible, and always wear your seatbelt. The beginners are where all drivers start so they should learn as much as possible before it's too late.
I myself have been involved in one vehicle accident since I have been driving. It was winter time with snow and ice covering the roads. I was 2 seconds away from being home, with my parents following right behind me in their car, they witnessed the whole thing. I have never seen my mom run so fast to my car after being hit, or worried so much in her life. I was entering a four way intersection that had no stop signs. I still stopped because it was common knowledge, and there was a fence blocking my view down one road. After stopping, I began to accelerate into the intersection going maybe 5-10 mph, when I saw a truck a couple of feet away from my window coming directly for me. That truck did not stop or even slow down through the intersection. With how close he already was, there was no time for me to do anything, I didn't have time to think about my next step and then bam, he hit me. My car slid a couple hundred feet until it was stopped by crashing into a snowbank. I was so shook up and have never been more terrified in my life. I was lucky to end up not getting seriously injured, besides being a little sore the next couple of days. It turns out, that guy that was driving the truck that hit me was under the influence of multiple drugs, and didn’t have insurance or anything on his truck.
Another time I was almost involved in a car accident was when I was 10 years old. It was the middle of winter, so again there was snow and ice covering the roads. I was invited to go to lunch with my friend and her mom. Her mom was intoxicated and I didn’t even know until we were getting off of the freeway and we started fishtailing around at a very high speed. Luckily, my friend's mom was able to correct it, but after the fact she acted like nothing was wrong and she almost didn't kill her own kid, along with someone else's kid.
There are plenty of steps you can take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road. Those steps include avoiding distractions, practice defensive driving, keeping a safe distance to other vehicles on the road, driving sober, adjusting your mirrors, checking your blind spots regularly, and being conscious of your surroundings and paying attention to the road.
