More than just a license

Some moments stay with you forever, even if they only last a few seconds. I remember riding the Metro bus on my way to an appointment when everything changed in an instant. A car behind another vehicle was speeding and crashed into the car in front with tremendous force. The impact was so violent that the front car's airbags deployed immediately, while the car behind burst into flames. Quickly, bystanders got out of their cars and rushed to help both drivers before emergency responders arrived. Watching strangers risk their own safety to help others is something I have never forgotten. That wasn't the first time a car accident had left a lasting impression on me. At the end of my freshman year of high school, a student I attended school with was killed in a tragic crash. The following school year was actually supposed to be her senior year, a milestone she never got to experience. Later, I learned that she lived just down my street and that the accident happened only a few blocks from her home. Realizing how close she was to making it back safely made the loss feel even more heartbreaking. These two experiences changed the way I view driving because they showed me that a single decision behind the wheel can change lives. It honestly made me scared of driving, which is why I want to wait longer until I drive. Both situations made me realize that safe driving is not just about following traffic laws. It is about protecting lives. Although these events lasted only moments, the memories have stayed with me ever since.

Driver education plays a major role in preventing accidents and reducing the number of deaths caused by driving. I feel like during driving school, stories like this need to be told so that young people understand how serious this is. Before someone becomes a driver, they need to understand the responsibility that comes with controlling a vehicle. Driver education teaches important skills such as understanding traffic laws, recognizing road hazards, and practicing defensive driving techniques. It also teaches new drivers about the dangers of distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence. Many accidents happen because drivers make careless choices or do not fully understand the risks involved. By providing proper education and training, we can help create safer drivers who are prepared to make responsible decisions.

There are many steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. One of the most important steps is preventing distracted driving by avoiding texting, using social media, or doing anything that takes attention away from the road. Drivers should also follow speed limits because speeding reduces reaction time and can make accidents much more severe. Another way to prevent deaths is by stopping impaired driving and making responsible choices when alcohol or drugs are involved. Seat belts should always be worn because they can greatly reduce the risk of serious injuries during a crash. If every driver made safer choices and took responsibility for their actions, many unnecessary accidents could be prevented.

Another step I think should be taken when it comes to safe driving is making harsher punishments for bad drivers. Harsh punishments will encourage people to follow traffic laws more carefully. For example, drivers who speed, drive while distracted, or drive under the influence should face long jail time if their poor choices are the cause of someone’s death.These consequences would remind drivers that unsafe choices can have serious results. When people know there are strict penalties, they may be less likely to take risks on the road. The harsher the  punishments are could help reduce accidents and make roads safer for everyone. 

My experiences witnessing the effects of car accidents have shown me that crashes are not just numbers or statistics. When someone from my school died in a car accident during my freshman year, it showed me how quickly a tragedy can affect an entire community. Friends, family members, classmates, and teachers are all impacted when someone loses their life because of a crash. Watching both cars crash while on the Metro bus shoed me how dangerous driving can become in just a few moments. That experience made me realize that accidents can happen unexpectedly, which is why every driver needs to stay focused and careful. These moments have stayed with me and have motivated me to wait until I'm more older to drive. 

When I become a driver, I want to make choices that protect myself, my passengers, and everyone else on the road. I will practice safe driving by keeping my phone away while driving and avoiding any distractions that could take my attention away from the road. I will always wear my seat belt and encourage my passengers to do the same. I will follow speed limits, obey traffic laws, and adjust my driving based on weather and road conditions. I will also never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs because I understand how dangerous that decision can be. By building these habits early, I can become a safer and more responsible driver.

Being a safe driver also means helping others understand the importance of responsible choices. If I see a friend or family member driving dangerously, I can speak up and remind them about the risks of their actions. Sometimes people do not realize how quickly a small mistake can lead to a serious accident. By setting a good example and following safe driving practices, I can encourage others to do the same. Conversations about distracted driving, seat belts, and responsible decisions can help change the way people think about road safety. Everyone has a role in creating safer roads, and even small actions can make a difference.

In conclusion, safe driving is a responsibility that every driver must take seriously. My experiences of losing someone from my school and witnessing two vehicles crash into each other has shown me how devastating accidents can be. Driver education is important because it gives people the knowledge and skills needed to make safer choices behind the wheel. Reducing distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, and other dangerous behaviors can help save lives. I am committed to becoming a responsible driver and encouraging others to value safety on the road. Every decision a driver makes matters, and choosing to drive safely can protect lives and prevent families from experiencing unnecessary loss.
