I was about to walk into church service when my phone buzzed with a text from my sister. I opened it, and in an instant, my world changed. She told me that my brother had been in a terrible car accident. I froze in panic. Tears immediately filled my eyes as I tried to process what I had just read. My heart felt like it had been ripped out of my chest. There weren't many details, and I didn't know if my brother had survived. The uncertainty was one of the most terrifying feelings I have ever experienced.
I wanted to be with him, but I couldn't. I was seven hours away with no car and no way to get to the hospital. I felt completely helpless. While my family rushed to find out more information, all I could do was pray and wait. Some members of my church gathered around me, comforting me and praying for my brother. Even though I couldn't be there beside him, knowing that so many people were praying for him gave me hope during one of the darkest moments of my life.
When I finally learned that my brother had survived, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief. Later, I found out just how serious the accident had been. My brother wasn't driving. Someone else was behind the wheel, driving nearly 90 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone. The driver was making reckless decisions that put everyone in the car at risk. Just before the crash, my brother had unbuckled his seat belt to pick up his phone after it had fallen onto the floorboard. Seconds later, the vehicle crashed, and because he was no longer wearing his seat belt, he was ejected through the window.
His injuries were devastating. He suffered multiple broken bones and serious injuries to his neck and spine. The doctors weren't sure what his recovery would look like, and my family didn't know what the future would hold.
The first time I saw my brother after the accident wasn't in person. It was through a FaceTime call after he woke up. Seeing him lying in a hospital bed broke my heart, but something happened that I will never forget. Before anything else, he started praying and thanking God. Even after everything he had been through, his first response was to thank God. Then, with tears in his eyes, he asked a question that made me cry all over again.
"Will I ever be able to play soccer again?"
That question stayed with me because soccer wasn't just a sport to him. It was something he loved. Hearing him worry that he might never play again made me realize how quickly one reckless decision can change someone's entire future.
Watching my brother recover taught me lessons that no driver's education class ever could. Before the accident, I knew speeding was dangerous, but it was just something people talked about. After watching my brother fight through painful injuries and months of recovery, those warnings became real.
Today, I think differently every time I get into a vehicle. If someone is driving too fast, I become anxious. I don't like riding with people who speed or look at their phones while driving because I know how quickly things can go wrong. Even when I'm not the one driving, I pay attention to the road. I watch other vehicles, stay alert to what's happening around us, and understand that my safety can depend on someone else's choices.
My brother's accident also taught me that every person in a vehicle has a responsibility. Drivers should never let speed, distractions, or the desire to impress others influence their decisions. Passengers should also recognize the importance of wearing their seat belt for the entire ride. One moment of carelessness can have lifelong consequences.
Although my brother still lives with some of the effects of his injuries, his determination never faded. Through hard work, faith, and perseverance, he continued fighting through recovery. The same person who wondered if he would ever play soccer again refused to give up on that dream. Today, he plays soccer on a semi-professional team. Watching him return to the game he loves is nothing short of inspiring.
Whenever I think back to that Sunday morning, I remember the fear of reading my sister's text, the prayers that surrounded me at church, and the overwhelming relief of seeing my brother alive. I also remember the lesson that came from one reckless decision. Safe driving isn't just about following the law. It's about protecting the people who trust you with their lives.
My brother's accident changed our family forever, but it also changed me. It taught me to value every trip, every seat belt, every speed limit, and every life. Those lessons will stay with me every time I get into a car, and I hope sharing our story encourages others to make choices that could save a life.
