Reducing Driving Related Deaths

Some steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths by driving are creating more strict punishments for driving illegally, creating a more strict driver’s education course, improving roads, encouraging people to take care of their vehicles, and encouraging people to wear their seat belts more. By creating more strict punishments for breaking the law, it would encourage people to not risk the chance of being penalized for their actions. This would reduce the amount of people that would drink and drive, text and drive, and speed. A lower number of people breaking the law would also decrease the number of accidents. Having a more strict driver’s education course would require people to pay more attention during the course to be able to pass. Being more strict would also allow fewer people to pass the course without doing everything correctly because some courses are too lenient when it comes to letting people pass. Improving the conditions of the roads can reduce the amount of accidents that occur. Rumble strips on the side of roads are very important and useful for drivers. Many people drive while they are tired and the rumble strip keeps them from driving off the road. Keeping roads intact is important for when people are driving during storms, or on the road while it is icy. The cause of many accidents is a faulty part in or on a vehicle. So encouraging people to take care of their vehicles can reduce the number of accidents because people would replace the parts of their vehicles that may cause accidents. Encouraging people to wear seat belts would greatly change the amount of deaths that happen in car accidents. Seat belts keep people in their seats while their car is rolling or getting sideswiped. Without seat belts, people can be thrown out of their car, through the windshield, and just around the car. Accidents are bound to happen, and people wearing their seat belts would decrease the amount of deaths that occur during the accidents.
I have been lucky enough to have not been in a car accident, but I have been in a vehicle with irresponsible drivers. My brother used to drive me to school in the morning, and sometimes he would not get much sleep the night before, and he would doze off while driving. The only thing that kept him on the road was me keeping him awake and the rumble strip on the side of the interstate. After a couple of instances of that, I started driving in the mornings. I have also been in a vehicle with people who do not wear seat belts. Seat belts significantly reduce the amount of deaths that happen in an accident.
One step that I can take to be a safer driver is to have a phone stand holder in the car so I do not have to look down at my phone to change the song or playlist I am listening to. Another step I can take is to get a dash cam to help me if I were to get into an accident. I can become a better driver by practicing specific skills such as parallel parking, reversing, and learning to drive a manual vehicle. I can help others become safer on the road by encouraging them to not text and drive and to wear their seat belt. I think these are very important because a major cause of accidents is becoming distracted by cellular devices, and if an accident does happen, seat belts will help prevent injuries and death.
