In
the days of modern technology where screens are ever-present and
ever-demanding, it is easy to become distracted, especially when
dealing with an important task such as driving. Although texting
while driving is an increasing problem, the main issue is the
driver’s ignorance of being a smart and safe driver on the road.
Many new teenagers becoming drivers are too caught up in passing a
test rather than realizing the bigger picture with driving, the
responsibility. It is everyone's responsibility to pay attention to
their surroundings and to treat driving as a serious task.
The
rules of the road are simple thanks to books and online resources
available to students who can educate themselves to become the best
driver they can be. Information about different scenarios, rules, and
regulations are listed in multiple forms of reading provided by the
local DMV in every city. Laws have been passed to ensure the safety
of everyone, and it is the duty of the individual to become educated
about these safety measures to reduce the number of accidents and
deaths.
Problems
lay in the hands of those who have been careless with themselves,
taking their eyes off the road for any reason. Although no certain
plan will combat the individuals’ actions of becoming distracted,
there is a measure to take beforehand to ensure a less likely chance
of car-related accidents, the use of driving apps. Driving
institutions should add more thought towards a student’s choices
after they receive their license such as an app issued to drivers
that measures the speed a driver is travelling and the level of phone
usage during that time. It would build good habits, empowering new
drivers to drive undistracted by their phones, while the driving
institution records their performance. And if by any means action
needs to be taken, they will have proof to do so.

Although
I know many family members who have been in accidents, I, thankfully,
have never been in one. From these accidents I’ve known that they
weren’t caused by recklessness, just accidents that can happen to
anyone. I have seen family members and friends drive irresponsibly as
they check their phones at moments they find “convenient” during
their drive, needing a nudge and reminder to be aware of their habits
so that they do not repeat it again. We must also give thanks to
officers for doing their jobs that ensure reckless actions are
addressed.

I
take it upon myself to keep my phone away from sight and on silent
while driving, no chance of being tempted to take a glance. I make
sure to address family members when they make the mistake of taking
their eyes off the road and by ensuring that I, myself, am
accountable to not act opposite of what I say.
