Before
you even have a chance to get behind the wheel on a road you are
required to take drivers ed. If one is under eighteen, they are
required to have seven hours of supervised driving behind the wheel,
as well as seven hours of observation. The student is also supposed
to have thirty hours of driving with a licensed driver over
twenty-one. All these precautions are taken before the driver takes
to the streets by themselves, to prevent accidents with new drivers.
If people were not required to take drivers ed, the roads would be
chaotic and the amount of deaths by car accidents would sky rocket.
In order to reduce the number of deaths related to driving, we could
start enforcing that there be limits for drivers in their first 6
months in receiving their license. So, these new drivers can't drive
far distances on major motorways until they've gotten to know and
feel out the slower paced and safer roads. Most people who get their
licenses get excited and grab all their friends and hit the road to
show off their new skills. This kind of impulsive behavior is why
these kinds of accidents happen. Another way to try and prevent
deaths related to driving, is restricting drivers from driving long
distances, like say on a road trip. Their drive time should be
restricted and if with other people, one other person in the car must
be conscious while the driver is driving. In this instance if the
driver for any reason is not feeling their best or paying attention,
the passenger or other person who is conscious can check on them.
When it comes to people traveling these distances alone, they should
have to pull over at night and rest for at least eight hours. I have
never experienced a car accident myself but my father has been in
multiple as well as my grandmother. My grandmother has developed
anxiety while driving and so avoids getting into cars because of her
previous accidents. In my father's case he ended up breaking his foot
in the event of an auto accident. My sister also often drives
irresponsibly when she is late, to which I worry for her safety. With
this being said, I sometimes find myself being guilty of the same
thing. In order to become a better driver I can leave for events
earlier so I don’t rush on the road, putting me and the people
around me in danger. I can tell the person I'm in the car with to let
me hold their phone while they are driving, so they won't have the
urge to reach for it. I believe that if everyone were to do their
part while driving, these death rates would decrease significantly.
Drivers ed is absolutely necessary for it teaches people the ropes of
driving, and without it the amount of deaths related to driving would
become devastatingly higher than they already are.
