Automobile
accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers. On
average, six teenagers between the ages of 16-19 die due
to motor vehicle accidents daily. When
teen drivers ride with other passengers, their risk of being in a
fatal car crash doubles. Overall, teenagers underestimate or are
unable to recognize hazardous driving conditions. One solution to
help this crisis is mandatory Drivers ed
courses. These classes give teens a safe and supervised environment
to learn and practice safe driving skills they may not learn from
family and friends. Experienced drivers often forget to explain the
responsibilities and habits of good driving as they have become
routine or they did not learn them. Completing a
drivers education course prior to getting your license teaches
students how to safely operate a vehicle on busy interstates, at
night, and during other dangerous driving conditions.
This is an extremely valuable tool to reduce the
number of accidents and those including vehicular homicide.

As
a victim of a car accident not so long ago, the accident did affect
me. My sister was the driver, and I was the passenger, and my little
brother was in the back. We were at a red light when we got hit by a
drunk driver. Many people were injured, and one man died. The
accident caused me and my siblings to go to physical therapy and a
chiropractor. After this experience, I was very nervous to get my
driver’s license. I ended up waiting a little while before I went
and took the test.

In order to become a safe driver, I make sure that all passengers in
my car have on their seat belt prior to starting the car. As the
driver, it is my responsibility to make sure the car is in good
working condition and that I can see out the windows and mirrors.
While I am driving, I avoid using my phone. Phones are a
big distraction to the drivers. Some drivers tend to text and drive
or scroll through the internet for music. This can cause them to
lose control of the stirring wheel, and they lose contact on the
road. The steps that I and others should do to avoid using their
phone while driving is putting their phone on silent, put the phone
out of reach, or some apps help you not to text while you drive. I
also, obey the state laws and operate within the given speed limit.
My goal is to be a role model for others to follow. If my friends
and family see me practicing safe driving, my hope is that they will
too. Additionally, I will help my family and friends with becoming
safer drivers by pointing out ways to improve.
