Taking Driving Seriously

It is well known that in order to drive legally, one must meet multiple requirements. One, is to know the laws of the road, and what to do in normal driving situations. Two, is to show one's skill driving through the driving test. Drivers ed should be teaching people how to react in dangerous situations, because more often than not, it is in these dangerous conditions that accidents occur. The importance of this education is crucial to the safety of every person who is either driving, or simply riding on the roads. With this education removed, driving would be much more dangerous than it is now if not non-existent due to its danger.

One way drivers ed could be changed is in the driving test itself. Knowing basic driving skills are good and all, but how are those going to be helpful when confronted with a non-basic situation on the road? Young drivers should be mandated to take a course in how to react in dangerous driving situations. With making this class mandatory, different aspects of this class can be added to the driving test in order to be more sure that the driver can handle him/herself on the road. Another way to lessen car related deaths is to create a limit on how old one must be to own a sports, or muscle car. Several parents like to purchase their children cars for their 16th birthday, and in many cases these vehicles tend to be sports cars. Not only are these cars dangerous for the new driver to use due to the large amount of horsepower in the car, but it is also dangerous for the people this driver comes in contact with on the road. By creating an age limit on driving muscle type cars, the new driver will be able to become used to driving in a less stressful and dangerous environment.

From personal relationships, none of my close friends or family members have been in serious car accidents. One reason I believe that behind this fact is that a driving class used to be mandatory for all public high school students. This guaranteed that each and every student had at least some motor skills before attempting to take the driver test. I personally have never been in a car accident, I believe due to the courses and dangerous driving classes that I have partaken in. Not too long after getting my license, I was a part of a dangerous driving class put on by the local police department. This class taught me how to drive when one hydroplanes, edges off the road at a high speed, and how to avoid pedestrians crossing an intersection at high speeds. All of these were taught behind the wheel, and have better prepared me for possible dangerous situations that I may encounter. A way that I could encourage other people to be safe on the road is to recommend driving safety classes, and attending them with said person.
