The Cost of a Moment

On a Saturday night in August 2025, a black BMW, driving recklessly across the median on I-15 in Temecula, crashed into a white Nissan Sentra, causing both vehicles to burst into flames. Four people lost their lives that night, including three members of the Coptic Orthodox Church—a 23-year-old woman, a 14-year-old boy, and a 15-year-old girl. As a member of the Coptic community, I understand the deep pain that spread throughout our congregation and the larger church family. The Temecula crash reveals an important truth that goes beyond statistics and news headlines: driving safely is a moral responsibility to our families, communities, and faith. This tragedy reminds us to take our responsibilities behind the wheel with greater seriousness and personal commitment.

Reckless driving causes tragedies that are completely preventable. Every crash caused by speeding, breaking traffic laws, or distracted driving begins with a choice, a choice to put convenience ahead of the safety of others. The victims in Temecula never chose to ride with a reckless driver, and the people in the Nissan never expected to be placed in danger that night. Yet they all paid the highest price because of someone else's careless decision. This is perhaps the most heartbreaking part of traffic fatalities: innocent people often suffer the most. Every decision we make behind the wheel has consequences that reach far beyond the driver, affecting families, schools, churches, and entire communities. We must recognize this responsibility every time we drive.

Safe driving requires both proper education and constant awareness. Drivers must understand how their vehicles respond, how road and weather conditions affect safety, and when they are too tired or distracted to drive responsibly. Young drivers especially need to learn that cars are not symbols of status but powerful machines capable of causing serious harm in just seconds. The Coptic Orthodox Church teaches that every human life is sacred and that we are responsible for caring for one another. Driving safely is one way we honor God's gift of life while protecting everyone whose safety depends on our choices.

When young people die, families lose children and siblings, schools lose students who could have made meaningful contributions, and churches lose members who strengthened their congregations. Church communities are forced to grieve together while supporting those who have been deeply affected.

In the Coptic Orthodox faith, we believe in supporting one another and accepting responsibility for our actions. These values apply directly to driving. When we are behind the wheel, we represent more than ourselves—we represent our families, our values, and our faith. A reckless driver can bring pain to an entire community, while a careful driver honors the trust others place in them and demonstrates the responsibility our faith calls us to show every day.

Moving forward requires action in several areas. We should support stronger traffic law enforcement and better driver education in our schools and communities. We must also build a culture that refuses to accept reckless driving as normal. At the same time, we should continue supporting grieving families through practical help and spiritual encouragement after tragedies occur. Most importantly, each of us must commit to driving safely and responsibly every time we get behind the wheel. By making that commitment, we honor the lives of those who have been lost.

Whenever I drive, I think about the three members of the Coptic community who died in Temecula. I think about their families and the futures that were taken from them. I know their deaths could have been prevented, and I choose to drive with care, patience, and full attention. I do this not only to protect myself but also every passenger, every driver, and every person who shares the road.

In the end, safe and educated driving reflects our values. It honors our faith, protects our communities, and shows respect for every human life. The Temecula tragedy reminds us that reckless choices have real and lasting consequences.
