Driver education plays a crucial role in reducing the number of deaths resulting from driving incidents. The importance of driver education lies in the principle that you cannot prevent what you do not know about. By learning from past incidents, we can understand what causes accidents and how to avoid them. Comprehensive education provides drivers with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle various driving situations safely, thereby enhancing road safety and reducing fatalities.
One strategy for minimizing driving-related deaths is to make driver education mandatory in high schools. Young drivers often lack awareness of the risks they face on the road. By including comprehensive driver education into high school curriculum, we can ensure that every new driver receives the necessary training before getting behind the wheel. This training should cover a wide range of topics, including the dangers of distracted driving, the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving ability, and the importance of seat belts.
Raising the standards for obtaining a driver's license is another measure. Implementing stricter testing and setting a higher minimum age for both permits and licenses can help ensure that only those who are truly prepared are allowed to drive. This could include practical exams that test a driver's ability to handle emergency situations, navigate complex traffic patterns, and demonstrate defensive driving techniques. By setting higher standards, we can significantly reduce the number of inexperienced and unprepared drivers on the road. We could also raise the age limit required to obtain a learner’s permit. Even though it is important to have as much experience as possible before becoming a driver, we also know that the part of the brain responsible for our decision making (the prefrontal cortex) doesn’t finish maturing until we are 25. While it would be ridiculous to make people wait until they are 25 to start driving considering our typical timeline of getting out into the world on our own, it does seem a little silly to be putting teens on the road who are ten years away from reaching that level of development.
Although, I think one of the most effective strategies is having uncomfortable but necessary conversations about the realities of driving-related deaths. Many people do not realize the severe consequences of irresponsible driving until it is too late. It is easy to look at tragedies happening to other people and detach yourself because we think things like “it won’t be me”, especially when we are young and have never experienced anything that traumatizing. These conversations should be an integral part of driver education programs, emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices and the potentially life-altering consequences of negligent behavior.
Personal experiences often highlight the importance of driver education and safe driving practices. For instance, I was nearly involved in a car crash on the highway when another driver suddenly slammed on their brakes, causing a chain reaction. My mom managed to avoid the accident by pulling off to the side of the road just in time. This incident showed how quickly things can go wrong on the road and the importance of being prepared to react in an emergency. While nobody got hurt, it was my first near experience on the road and I couldn’t stop shaking for several minutes.
Another personal story of the importance of driver education involves my dad, who nearly died in a wreck after falling asleep at the wheel. He crashed at the same spot where his family members had a fatal accident a few years earlier. While it was probably just a coincidence that he crashed in the same spot, I avoid driving on that road. I was too young to remember this happening, but I have seen pictures that my mom took. Currently, I have family members who watch TikTok or text on their phone while driving. This happens whether we are driving for just a couple of minutes or long distances. It worries me because distracted driving is one of the leading causes for car accident related deaths.
To become a better and safer driver, I plan to take several steps. First, I will reduce my distractions. I will keep my phone out of reach while driving to avoid the temptation to use it. I will also keep the music at a reasonable volume and create a set playlist before I start driving, so I do not have to adjust the radio while on the road. These small changes can make a big difference in my ability to focus on driving.
Another helpful tool is the cruise control feature, which allows me to maintain a steady speed without constantly checking the speedometer. This is useful on long drives, because it helps me stay consistent and prevents speeding. Speeding could easily cause me to lose control of the car, and I could not only seriously injure or kill myself, but I would also be putting others at risk. By using these features and staying aware of my surroundings, I can improve my driving habits and set a positive example for others.
In conclusion, driver education is vital in reducing the number of deaths related to driving. By making driver education mandatory in high schools, raising the standards for obtaining a driver's license, and having open conversations about the dangers of irresponsible driving, we can make our roads safer for everyone. My personal experiences have shown me the importance of staying focused and driving responsibly, and I am committed to becoming a better driver and helping others do the same. By taking these steps, we can work together to create a safer driving environment for all.
