I
have attained my drivers license so I went through driving school,
however I did it online where everything is impersonal and easy to
forget. Even my peers who sat through the classes spoke of how they
would doze off and not really care about the information being spoken
to them. Their reasoning? “Well I won’t get into an accident,
nothing like this could ever happen to me.” However this normally
isn’t the case. We had a young boy get into an accident the first
day on the road in my school, a bad crash that he is lucky to come
away without injuries. When going through driving school kids don’t
take the information they're told seriously and that has to change.
The only person who can make a change in the overall driving habits
of teens are those teens. It is up to us to take the importance of
road safety seriously. The small bad habits that teens do every day
make a difference. Is taking a sip of a Starbucks drink more
important than taking this turn safely? Does the music need to be
changed several times while driving on the highway. Does your friends
gossip matter more than your visibility in the rain? This logical
thought process will not reach everyone. Thus, more serious actions
than a talk about appropriate behaviors need to be done.

The
ultimate way to ensure safer driving is to implement trackers in cars
that measure the speed and safety of driving and relates that back to
either a parent or insurance. So that the student can actively see
how their habits which may seem fine are actually dangerous. Teens
are stubborn, and even if they think they are being safe, they likely
aren’t. Showing them how that sip of Starbucks or glance at their
phone affected their driving is the only way to make an effective
point.
