The Impacts of Driving Education and Safety

In elementary school, my mother and I got into an accident that was caused by a teenage girl on her phone. I was not seriously hurt but my mother's car had serious damage. It was a scary experience because I couldn't comprehend what was going on. Driving is a privilege that needs your undivided attention. Simple distractions, like the use of a cell phone, while driving, can cause horrible accidents. This is why we should stay distraction-free while driving, to prevent accidents like the one I experience or worse. Driving is one of the few activities that require both visual, cognitive, and manual attention. With all the various distractions, it can be hard for others to remain focused. However, when driving the main priority is reaching your destination safely. The food, text messaging, and other distractions can wait.

In order, to continue reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving, enforced education and about the matter are crucial. Without knowledge of traffic rules, signs, and basic car safety, people will continue to put themselves and others in danger. Before attending driving school, I was completely unaware of the numerous traffic laws that are needed to keep everyone safe. Hypothetically, if I did not attend driving school, there is a high possibility that I would get into an accident that could potentially hurt myself or others. Proven through statistics, driving in America is more dangerous than combat in wars. To put it simply, driving education could be the difference between life or death, which is why it is and will remain essential.

As well as learning about safe driving and good habits, judicial and moral consequences should also be taught and enforced. Without knowledge of possible consequences, people will not practice safe driving. However, if people are aware of the severity of their actions and how severe repercussions may follow, it could discourage them to practice unsafe driving in the future. People should constantly be reminded of the penalties for unsafe driving as well as showing the cruel side, which could involve injuries and death.

I have not experienced a car accident, as a driver, but some of my friends have. This was because they don't always practice the best driving habits. I would like to think I am a very safe driver but there is always room for improvement. I and others need to take more accountability for themselves and their peers. This may mean discouraging yourself or your other from driving while intoxicated. As well as enforcing your passengers to practice safe habits as well. Making sure everyone, including yourself, the driver has their seatbelt on before you start the car is another way to improve everyone's safety. As friends, family members, acquaintances, and drivers we should want the safety of others just as much as we want our own. Although we are only required to take the driver's ed course once, I plan to continuously keep myself informed by reviewing current driving safety rules to ensure my safety as well as others.
