Driving can be a really scary thing. Not only are we worried about ourselves, but we also need to pay attention to our surroundings. When we first get our licenses, it seems like we have so much freedom but with freedom comes responsibility. In California, we can get our permits at 15 ½ and get our licenses at age 16. As teenagers, we are already reckless humans, so giving us the ability to drive can be a really scary feeling, especially for our parents. Speaking from experience, I got a little too comfortable driving a little too fast and that ended in a few problems. Many teenagers, ages 16-19, tend to get into accidents and males specifically get into more. According to a report, “... 250,000 car accidents occur there each year. Of these accidents, more than 3,700 result in fatalities”. By understanding the importance of driver education and learning from mistakes, we won’t only be protecting ourselves but also those around us on the road.
After taking my permit test, I believe we were studying to pass not studying to retain information for long-term use. The things we learn from our permit tests can be very important and could keep us from ending up in an accident. Driver education can play a crucial role in reducing the number of deaths resulting from driving by providing individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the road safely. By educating teenage drivers on traffic laws, hazards, and the importance of responsible behaviors behind the wheel, driver education can help provide safer driving practices and promote road safety. Through proper education and training, drivers can make informed decisions, anticipate potential dangers, and react appropriately in challenging situations, ultimately leading to a decrease in fatalities.
To be a better and safer driver to help reduce deaths, it is important to follow all traffic laws and regulations. For example, you should avoid distractions such as using your phone while driving, always wear a seatbelt, maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles, and obey speed limits. Additionally, being aware of your surroundings, and practicing defensive driving techniques can help prevent accidents and keep yourself and others safe on the road. It’s important to remember that being a responsible and courteous driver not only protects you but also contributes to the overall safety of everyone using the road.
I got my license in November of 2022 and by March of the next year, I had already been pulled over and rear-ended somebody. One day in February, on my way to dance practice, I was speeding because I didn’t want to be late. There was a bus in my lane so I decided to get over and try to speed up past the bus. Once I sped up in front of the bus, I went back to my original lane going about 15-20mph over the speed limit. To my surprise, a cop was sitting on the sidewalk on his motorcycle. Once I saw him, I knew I was screwed. I saw his lights go off as he pulled out into the street and I pulled over to the side. Thankfully I walked away from that situation with just a warning but it was still a wrongdoing on my end. After that, I ended up getting into an accident almost one month later. On a day in March, I was driving home from a STEM conference in my mother’s car, unfortunately, and rear-ended an old lady. She had stopped at a crosswalk because a civilian was getting ready to cross the street. In my own opinion, I believe that she and I both could’ve made it past the crosswalk before someone had to stop but she decided to stop abruptly in front of me. I ended up rear-ending her and the pedestrian that was in the crosswalk just went on with her day as if nothing had happened. I got out of the car to see the damage and realized that my mom's car was far worse than hers. The lady gets out of her car and the first thing she says to me is “You better call the police”. My heart sank. I didn't call the police. I called my mom.
After rear-ending someone, I always maintain a good distance between myself and the car in front of me just to be extra cautious. From being pulled over, I learned that it’s okay to be late because if you speed, it could result in an accident or being pulled over as I have learned. For other drivers like myself, I recommend being a good distance from the driver in front of me and making sure to constantly check my speedometer. Overall, driver’s education and safe driving are essential to ensure the well-being of oneself and others on the road. By adhering to traffic laws, avoiding distractions, and maintaining focus while driving, individuals can contribute to a safer driving environment for all. Prioritizing safe driving practices not only reduces the risk of accidents but also fosters a culture of responsibility and consideration on the road. Driving can be quite overwhelming since we have to think about many things at once but once you understand the safety, it becomes easier, like second nature.
