Driving is an important aspect of our day-to-day lives. It gets us to schools, work, appointments, the store, etc. However, driving is also a huge responsibility that one can make a huge impact with one bad decision. With car accidents, there are so many injuries and fatalities that can be prevented if drivers are safe and responsible in their decisions. Driver education is key when it comes to knowing the road, being aware of hazardous conditions, and making smart decisions when driving. By enforcing driver education, limiting reckless driving, and encouraging drivers to take responsibility in their decisions, the community and population can prevent many fatalities due to driving.

Driver education is key in preventing fatal driving accidents because it provides the driving population with the necessary information before they are fully independent on the road. Operating a vehicle is only one aspect that comes with driving. Many rules of the road, laws, signs, speed limits, right-of-way, defensive driving, and hazardous conditions are just a few more things that come with driving. Driver education can enforce certain aspects of driving such as hazardous conditions because it can inform drivers of just how fast a dangerous scenario can occur and how important it is to stay focused. It can also enforce the importance of driving doesn't only pertain to the driver, but also as a result of their actions the people around them such as passengers, pedestrians, and even other vehicles.

Another key aspect of driver education is enforcing the consequences of unsafe driving behaviors. Distracted driving, reckless driving, driving under the influence, aggressive driving, and failure to wear a seat belt are just a few unsafe driving decisions that can result in severe car accidents. For instance, with the use of cellphones drivers are putting themselves, passengers, and others at risk by engaging in texting and driving. When drivers take their eyes off the road to glance at their phone, they are not aware of their surroundings which can result in many hazards. Driver education can enforce the importance of these unsafe driving behaviors before these bad habits are developed. The main focus isn't to just pass the driving test, but to be safe for the rest of their driving lives.

There are many ways to limit the number of fatalities due to driving. One key focus is limiting distracted driving. Drivers should not engage in texting and driving by putting their cellphones down. If one needs to make a call or send a message, then they should wait till they are parked in a secure location. Another way to limit fatalities is to be mindful of speed limits. Not only are you endangering yourself, but also others if you are speeding. Drivers should always keep a safe distance from other vehicles and appropriately slow down when hazardous conditions are apparent.

Preventing impaired driving is a huge step in reducing fatalities. Drivers should not get behind the wheel if they are under the influence of any drug or alcohol that can impair their driving ability. Impaired drivers should seek alternative transportation, such as a designated driver, taxi ride, or limo service. Passengers should also be aware of impaired drivers and speak up if they feel as if one is trying to endanger themselves or others.

Wearing a seat belt is another way to prevent fatalities. Seat belts are mandatory for everyone in the vehicle, no matter how short the distance is. Drivers should also be mindful of their children and ensure that they are appropriately buckled in. Another aspect of driving that is vital is keeping your vehicle in good operating condition. Always check tire pressure, oil levels, brakes, and any other functioning parts in your vehicle. A good driver always keeps their vehicle in good condition.

Speaking from experience, I realize how quick things can get when it comes to driving. If you have been in a car accident before, you can substitute this paragraph with your own experience. For instance, I have seen drivers become distracted by their cellphones, speed recklessly, and just overall not pay attention to the road. Witnessing these unsafe driving behaviors really enforces the importance of being a responsible driver. It is not just the beginner drivers that need to be careful, even as an experienced driver, anyone can make a bad decision. Someone doesn't need to be driving aggressively to cause an accident, anyone can easily just get distracted for a second and it can be the fatal second that costs someone their life.

With that being said, I can take many steps to be a responsible driver. I can ensure that I pay attention to the road and not use my cellphone. I can also be mindful of the posted speed limit, always fasten my seat belt, keep a safe distance between vehicles, and I will never drive when I'm tired or distracted. I can be patient with other drivers instead of speeding up behind them when they are driving too slow. I can be a responsible driver by continuing my education even as I get my driver's license. A good driver is always learning.

I can also encourage others to be safe drivers. If I am a passenger in the car, I can reinforce safe driving habits by telling the driver to slow down, to put their phone down, or to just be more attentive. I can also set a good example by enforcing my own driving habits. The more people that are aware of the consequences of unsafe driving behaviors, the more that will be willing to change. Parents, teachers, friends, and family are all people that can reinforce safe driving habits to others.

In conclusion, everyone has a choice. Driver education informs the driving population of what they need to know, but it's up to drivers to ensure that they are practicing these laws when behind the wheel. Safe driving behaviors include being attentive, practicing defensive driving, obeying all driving laws, not driving under the influence, wearing a seat belt, keeping your vehicle in good condition, and being considerate of others. It is up to every driver out there to enforce these safe driving behaviors and take accountability. By being a more educated and responsible driver, as well as encouraging others to do the same, we can help reduce the number of fatalities due to driving.
