The Nemo
Effect
I would say
that driver’s safety is one of the most important concepts of
driving. Not only does drivers safety teach you how to become a
responsible driver, but it also teaches you how to avoid other
dangerous obstacles. Someone may believe that they are the safest
driver on the road, but that does not protect one from the other
drivers. Not only should you know drive safe, but you must also know
the techniques on how to safely dodge other careless drivers. Most
people do not realize the impact that could be made on one’s life
from a simple mistake in driving a car. Steps that could be taken to
prevent accidents could be the following: using a breathalyzer to
start a car to ensure there will be no one driving under the
influence, more discipline impact on speeding so there will be less
people carelessly driving, and maybe even suspending someone’s
license if they get into any accident or get a moving violation
within the first year of driving. I have had first-hand experience in
a collision. I was fifteen years old and driving home from volleyball
practice. My grandpa was in the passenger seat trying his best to
teach me and keep us safe. As I went to pull into the last turning
lane to go home, a young woman “t-boned” my drivers side sending
me into the opposite lane. Of course, I was terrified and did not
know what to do, but thankfully I had my grandpa with me to calm me
down and call the police. I only had a couple minor injuries, but my
poor car did not. I am now seventeen years old and I drive with
something that my dad likes to call the “nemo effect”. Now, if
you have never watched the movie Finding Nemo, I can elaborate
for you. This simply means that anytime you find yourself at a stop
sign, red light, crosswalk, or anything that forces you to stop or
yield your vehicle, then you will look both ways, inch yourself
forward a little more, and look both ways one or two more times
before you find it to be the safest amount of time for you to
proceed. I know some people wonder why I do this at red lights when
the light first turns green, but there are several people each year
that get into accidents that were caused from others carelessly
running a red light. I feel that the “nemo effect” is the best
and safest way to drive!
