Driving is a privilege and a responsibility, and drivers ed emphasizes this. It is easy to get caught up in the idea of driving and the freedom it will afford. Students can be unaware of the skills and rules of the road that need to be learned, the risks involved and the consequences. In drivers ed, we were shown videos to illustrate the consequences of poor driving skills and making bad decisions while driving. We saw many crashes resulting in death that were very visual. We also saw the painful reality of parents being told that their child had died in a crash, which was very emotional. I have a better understanding of the importance of driving safely and the possible consequences of not driving safely because of drivers ed.
I believe limiting distractions is an important step to reducing the number of deaths related to driving. According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, adjusting your audio device, entertainment or navigation system – anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. Comparing any of these activities to the importance of life – there is no comparison. Being cautious and aware of whether or not other drivers appear to be distracted is also important to reducing the number of deaths related to driving.
I have never been in a car accident. Since receiving my license and getting experience driving on my own, though, I am much more attentive to the way my family and friends drive. As a passenger, I am more mindful of my surroundings and the driver’s skill. Although this may be frustrating for the driver, it may benefit the driver by improving their concentration. I am also more aware of watching what the cars around us are doing and the importance of anticipating their actions. Being aware of this as a passenger has helped me develop this skill as a driver as well.
Experience is an important part of becoming a safe driver. I am also learning to trust my instincts and not allow what other cars are doing on the road affect my driving decisions. This was also emphasized in drivers ed. We were continually reminded what is at stake when students get behind the wheel. I think requiring a drivers ed class for adults, to reiterate the importance of safe driving, would also help improve safety on the road.
