There’s a certain sense of freedom you can feel while driving—the wind in your hair and not a care in the world. That is, until something happens to take that peace away: someone cuts in front of you, a pedestrian walks onto the street without looking, or another driver makes an impulsive choice. Our biological fight-or-flight reactions can cause us to burst out in anger or scream at the top of our lungs. However, as I have learned through my time behind the wheel, these reactions only lead to further instability. Overreacting can cause a driver to lose control and wreck the vehicle, which is why it is essential to maintain emotional discipline. This control behind the wheel is a microcosm of the discipline I apply to my life and my academic pursuits.
When you first get behind the wheel and put the car in drive, you must understand that you are surrendering all control outside of the vehicle. You cannot control other drivers or pedestrians; you can only control your own emotions and reactions. As a responsible driver, it is my job to let go of frustrations and keep driving. This lesson in resilience and emotional regulation has been a guiding principle in my academic journey. Proverbs 13:16 states, "Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly". This verse resonates deeply with me, serving as a reminder that prudence and intentionality are the foundations of both safe driving and successful engineering.
Driving fifty miles per hour down a freeway requires a constant awareness of multiple variables: other drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and traffic signals. My dad always tells me to keep my head on a swivel, meaning I cannot limit my vision to just the road ahead; I must keep an eye on all surroundings. This "swivel" mindset is exactly what is required in the field of mechanical engineering. Just as a driver must anticipate a sudden brake light to prevent injury, an engineer must foresee potential points of failure in a design to ensure public safety. Our surroundings must affect how we drive, just as the broader impact on society must inform how we innovate.
This commitment to focus and resilience was put to the test during my sophomore year of high school. Transitioning to a private institution presented a rigorous academic adjustment, and I ended the year with a 2.88 GPA. Rather than succumbing to the "fight or flight" panic of a poor performance, I applied the same discipline I use behind the wheel. I refined my study habits, increased my engagement, and focused on the variables I could control. By the end of my junior year, I had raised my GPA to 3.57. This experience taught me that success is not about the absence of obstacles, but the ability to remain focused on the goal despite them.
My fascination with driving extends beyond the steering wheel and into the mechanics of the vehicle itself. I have spent significant time working hands-on with cars, an experience that has bridged the gap between theory and application. This passion is what drives my desire to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Texas Tech University. I recognize that vehicles are 2,000-pound instruments of metal and physics that require responsible design. My ultimate goal is to launch a business specializing in next-generation automotive technologies that improve efficiency and safety, creating a legacy of innovation that contributes meaningfully to our country.
To excel in this field, I am dedicated to developing the character traits of communication, respect, and discernment. Colossians 4:6 advises us to let our speech be "seasoned with salt," encouraging the clarity and grace necessary for collaborative engineering problem-solving. Furthermore, I believe that respect—as commanded in 1 Peter 2:17—is the cornerstone of a healthy professional environment. I intend to bring these values to the Texas Tech community, not only through my coursework but by serving as an ambassador and mentor for future engineering students.
Driving is a great freedom, but it is also a shared responsibility to put the safety of others before our own impulses. As I prepare to
earn my official license and eventually my engineering degree, I am committed to a life of responsibility, discipline, and service. Whether I am navigating a busy intersection or designing the future of transportation, I will keep my head on a swivel and my focus on the path of integrity.
