2025 Driver Education Round 1
The Responsibility of Safe Driving: Lessons Learned on the Road

My journey into the world of driving began with learning to operate a manual car. This experience was not just about mastering the mechanics of driving; it was a lesson in focus and discipline. Driving a manual vehicle demands full attention, as it requires constant engagement with the car's gears and clutch. Unlike automatic cars, where one can easily shift gears with minimal thought, manual driving leaves no room for distractions. This meant that using my phone while driving was simply not an option. I quickly realized that the act of driving is a privilege that comes with significant responsibilities, and I was determined to uphold those responsibilities.
In high school, I attended a seminar that profoundly impacted my perspective on driving. This seminar was designed to educate students about the perils of irresponsible driving behaviors, including drunk driving and texting while behind the wheel. The statistics presented were staggering, and the personal stories shared by speakers served as a sobering reminder of the consequences of reckless actions. It instilled in me a healthy fear of irresponsible driving, a fear that I believe is essential for anyone who operates a vehicle. This newfound awareness compelled me to become an advocate for safe driving practices among my peers.
As I observed my classmates who drove automatic cars, I was struck by the alarming frequency with which they would text while driving. It was a common sight to see them glancing down at their phones, their attention diverted from the road. This behavior was not only reckless but terrifying. The thought of a momentary distraction leading to a catastrophic accident weighed heavily on my mind. I felt a responsibility to speak out, to persuade others to recognize the dangers of their actions. I became an active advocate against irresponsible driving, sharing my views and experiences with anyone who would listen.
My father’s history of receiving numerous speeding tickets and citations for using his phone while driving further fueled my determination to be a different kind of driver. From a young age, I had witnessed the consequences of his choices, and I knew that I did not want to follow in his footsteps. Each ticket he received was a stark reminder of the risks associated with careless driving. I was determined to carve a different path, one that prioritized safety and responsibility over recklessness.
However, nothing could have prepared me for the most devastating lesson on the importance of safe driving. In 2024, my close friend’s boyfriend, Jack, and his friend, Dillon, lost their lives in an uncontrollable and horrific car accident. The news of their passing was not only heartbreaking but also a stark reminder of how fragile life is and how quickly it can be taken away. Seeing the horrors that young deaths can bring upon families and entire communities was devastating. The grief, the loss, and the deep void left behind were unbearable, and it made me realize that we should all be making active efforts to combat any losses caused by preventable accidents. Their deaths reinforced my belief that driving is not just about getting from one place to another; it is about protecting ourselves and others. It is about making conscious choices that ensure no family has to experience the heartbreak that Jack and Dillon’s families endured.
As the years passed and the opportunity to acquire a new car arose, I found myself hesitating. The temptation to indulge in the convenience of a new vehicle was strong, yet I could not shake the feeling that doing so would enable bad behaviors that I had worked so hard to avoid. I realized that my commitment to safe driving extended beyond just my own habits; it was about creating a culture of responsibility among those around me. By choosing not to purchase a new car, I was making a statement about my values and the importance of prioritizing safety over convenience.
Being a safe driver is a multifaceted commitment that encompasses more than just following traffic laws. It involves understanding the dangers of addiction, whether it be to substances or habits like texting while driving. My experiences with manual driving, the educational seminar on irresponsible driving, and the influence of my father's choices have all shaped my perspective on road safety. But more than anything, the tragic loss of Jack and Dillon has left an indelible mark on my heart and reinforced my commitment to responsible driving. As I continue to advocate for safe driving, I remain steadfast in my belief that we can create a safer driving environment for everyone. It is my hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to recognize the importance of safe driving and the impact their choices can have on themselves and those around them.
