The rush of
adrenaline consumed my veins. My heart rate synced with my rising
speedometer. I was going 70 miles per hour (m.p.h) in a 40 m.p.h.
zone. I was weaving through traffic, nothing could stop me. At least
that is what I thought until I saw the motorcycle cop sitting on the
corner. I quickly slammed on my brakes and headed straight for the
parking lot up ahead, the prescience of my future ticket devastated
my morning. I was lucky to get a ticket that morning, I only wish
that others could have had the same, a ticket is far less devastating
than a loved one getting a call of an irreversible mistake.

Nothing is more
important than a drivers ed. Not only is it important to
understand the fundamentals of the road, but to also realize the
implications of a simple decision a driver can make.

In order to
reduce the number of deaths as a result of driving, it is important
to be aware, not only for the driver, but for others on the road. It
is essential to understand the fundamentals of the road and how to
deploy defensive driving techniques in the case of a possible
accident. The driver must be competent, they need to make quick,
knowledgable decisions. For example, a smart decision would be to not
drive at 2 a.m., since there is statistically more of a chance to be
in an accident by a drunk driver than at 11 p.m.

To be a better
and safe driver, I can slow down my speed. Especially since speed is
one of the leading causes of a teenager's death in the motor vehicle
accident. It is also important for me to practice my defensive
driving techniques. I can go in a parking lot, set up a cone, and
practice defensive driving maneuvers that will be possible to use on
the road. I can also make sure I am driving at a safe time and that I
am coherent enough to drive. If I am too sleepy, find a safer way
home.

There is plenty
of techniques and information that a driver must understand to
protect themselves and others on the road. As much as we wish it
wouldn't, every single driver will face a close call. But it is
important to have the knowledge and reflexes to protect oneself or
others.
