My name is Aurora Georgiadis and I am 15-year-old going into my sophomore year (2026-2027) at Tahoma High School. I am writing this essay for the “In The Driver’s Seat” scholarship because I want to go to driving school, but my family cannot afford it right now. More importantly, I want to become a truly safe and educated driver after learning a hard lesson one year ago.

One year ago I was in a car accident. Even though I was not driving, the crash scared me a lot. I saw how quickly something can go wrong on the road. The other driver was turned into our car driving on a major state route, our car was hit while myself and my 6 month old brother and mother were in the car. The drive hit our car and fled on foot from the scene. According to my mother they had multiple warrants for their arrest and were found at fault for the accident. However, they had no insurance and no income making it so we had to request funds from our insurance only even though we were not at fault. Our car was hit so hard it went into a ditch about 5 feet down an embankment, which meant we all had to be rescued out of the vehicle. The sound of the crash and the feeling of being thrown around still stays with me. My baby brother was luckily not injured, but he was really scared. One of my fingers was badly sprained and my mom has had significant bad injuries ever since. That day taught me that being a good driver is not just about getting your license, as things can change in a moments notice. It is about protecting yourself and everyone else on the road.

Since the accident I have thought a lot about driver safety. Many new drivers, including kids my age, do not realize how dangerous distracted driving, speeding, or just not knowing the rules can be. I believe every teenager should have to take a real driving class that teaches more than just how to pass the test. We need to learn how to watch for other cars, what to do in bad weather, and why we should never look at our phones. Being educated makes us confident, careful, and safer drivers.

I work very hard in school and keep a 4.0 GPA including advanced placement classes. I am also a competitive dancer and singer. These activities take up a lot of time, but they have taught me discipline and focus. Those same skills will help me be a responsible driver. Just like I have to stay focused during a dance performance or hit the right note when I sing, I will stay focused behind the wheel.

My dream is to get my driver’s license so I can help my family and be independent. My dad works long hours, my mom is still recovering from her injuries, and being able to drive myself to dance practice, voice lessons, and school events would make life easier for everyone. But before I get behind the wheel, I want to be properly trained at an outstandin driving school. This scholarship would pay for that training and help me become the safe driver I want to be.

I promise that if I receive this scholarship, I will take the classes seriously and use what I learn to stay safe and help others stay safe too. I want to be the kind of driver who is always alert, patient, and ready for anything. Since the accident I have been much more jumpy and on edge when in cars, especially if they have to stop suddenly. This has added stress and anxiety around learning to drive safely. I really want to drive, but am very tentative to make a mistake or get hit but someone like my mom was. Driving school and time to practice will help me become more confident and safer on the road.

Since the accident my mom as not been back to work. Which has left our family as a one income household. This has made many things much more difficult to afford, including buying a car for me, paying for extra insurance, and paying for driving school. I volunteer with my dance booster club and work for my dance studio part-time to try and help offset expenses where I can, but this scholarship would help my family so much and relieve the burden from my parents.

Thank you for considering my essay. I hope you will give me the chance to prove that I understand how important it is to be both educated and responsible every time I sit in the driver’s seat.
