2026 Driver Education Round 1
Within a blink things could have been fatal.

I was driving with my son in the car through Natomas California, approaching an intersection i had traveled through many times before. I had the right of way and began a left turn, expecting a routine and safe crossing. In an instant, everything changed. A young man ran a red light and entered the intersection at full process. There was no time to fully process the situation only time to react.
I pressed the brake hard.
That single decision may have saved at three of our lives. If I had not reacted in time, he would have struck the rear passenger side where my son was sitting in his car seat. The force of the impact could have cause the SUV I was driving to flip. What should have been a normal drive could have became a life altering tragedy in seconds.
We walked away physically unharmed later turning to soreness, but the experience stayed with me. I could have lost my son. My children could have lost their mother. Another mother could have also lost her son with seconds. Even now I feel anxiety when I drive through that same intersection. I tried to avoid driving in the area. Sometime my children have doctors appointments which I can't control and i have to drive with extra cautious. It's not because I made a mistake but because I learned how quickly another drivers decision can change everything. And how little control we sometimes have over the actions of others on the road.
This experience is why I strongly believe driver education and learners permits should be mandatory at age15 or 16. At the age young people are still developing judgement impulse control and awareness of consequences. Proper driver education is not just about learning how to operate a vehicle. It's about learning how to think safety responsibly and defensively in real world conditioned where mistakes can be fatal.
Driver inexperience is one of the leading cause of crashes. Many accidents are not cause by intentional recklessness but by the lack of awareness poor timing or misunderstanding of the right of way rules. Comprehensive driver education helps reduce the risks by teaching defensive driving skills such as scanning intersections anticipating unpredictable behavior from other drivers and maintaining safe distance in all conditions.
If all high school students received consistent and through driver education many accidents could be prevented before they ever happen. Early education builds lifelong habits of caution and responsibility helping young drivers understand that driving is not just a skill but a serious responsibility that affects every life on the road.
Reducing traffic related deaths also requires multiple layers of prevention. Stronger Enforcements of traffic laws especially regarding speeding distracted driving and running red lights can deter dangerous behaviors. Safer road design including clearer signage improving lighting and better intersection planning can reduce crash risks. Modern safety technology such as automatic emergency braking and collision warning systems can also help correct human error before it leads to serious harm.
I also believe additional safety measures should be encouraged. dash cameras can increase accountability and provide clear evidence in the event of an accident encouraging more responsibility driving. In addition, requiring drivers to retake a written or practical driving test after a number of years could help refreshed knowledge of traffic laws and ensure that safe driving habits remain current around them.
Since my accident I have become far more cautious behind the wheel. I approach intersection carefully even when I have the right of way. I assume other drivers may not see me or may make sudden mistakes. I avoid distractions stay focus and try to stay calm even when I feel anxious in certain areas. I also remind others friend and family about safe driving habits whenever I can. Because awareness often begins with a simple conversation.
That day in Natomas changed the way i view driving forever. It taught me that safety is never guaranteed even when you are following the rules. It depends on awareness preparation and the ability to react in an instant. Most importantly it reminded me that every time we get behind the wheel, we are responsible noy only for our own lives but for the lives of everyone we share the road with. The others riving is always someone's loved one. Don't let a careless mistake ruin your life or take away the life of another. Always practice safe driving.
