2026 Driver Education Round 2

Getting my driver’s license was not only a newly attained freedom but also a heavily weighted responsibility. December 31, 2025, was when my journey began. Elated is an understatement when describing how I felt after hearing that I had passed with a perfect score. It was like fireworks were shooting across the sky before the new year even began. However, even in my excitement, I still had some anxious feelings that I had to overcome. I remember my first time on the road by myself. I drove to Aldi, prayed before I left, and was on the phone with my mom the entire time, from when I arrived at the store until I got home. When I finally arrived back home, I felt accomplished, and that first drive helped me gain the confidence to want to drive again. However, I was better equipped to take that first drive because of the knowledge I gained from driver’s education and the lessons I took with a driving instructor.

Before even receiving my license, I took this course, which taught new drivers like me some essential rules to follow when on the road, such as defensive driving, traffic law compliance, and risk awareness. It was very beneficial because it helped me become more aware, build my confidence on the road, and recognize little details that many of us might miss if we did not take a deeper dive into the specifics of the vehicles we drive. These details included how to adjust the steering wheel, open the hood, and even open a trunk from the inside if we were trapped. I truly believe that if we all took the time to learn about the dangers of driving and received formal training, it would help us avoid major accidents.

Furthermore, many students at my school often drive a bit recklessly without acknowledging the speed limit or following the rules of the road. A few have gotten into car accidents in our school’s parking lot because of a lack of awareness or knowledge about driving and parking. However, I have also made mistakes on the road when I did not apply the information I had learned. Fortunately, these mistakes happen less frequently because that information has already sunk into my mind, helping me remember and apply what I have learned. In addition, when I make a mistake, I can choose to learn from it and make changes.

Being on the road has truly shown me that I do not just drive for myself but also for the people around me. It has increased my level of selflessness and shown me that patience is truly key. Whether I am on a back road or a highway, selflessness, patience, and awareness are the key qualities I carry with me to ensure the safety of myself and others. Many people experience road rage and respond harshly to mistakes others make on the road, and this is understandable. Nobody wants to be put in a situation where their lives could potentially be at risk. However, anger will not produce a quicker reaction; it will only cause us to react less thoughtfully. When we allow anger to cloud our judgment, we cannot think as clearly as we should.

Moreover, I think many of us forget that cars are machines. We control them, but they are still extremely powerful. For many people, once they learn the basics of driving and become consistent with their lessons, driving can begin to feel like a second nature. However, even after driving becomes a routine part of our lives, that does not give us the liberty to drive recklessly simply because we know how to drive or have been doing so for a long time. The knowledge we gain should still be applied even after we have moved beyond the “rookie” stage. That is why being watchful, selfless, and patient is essential, along with completing a driver’s education course.

In conclusion, being a new driver has introduced me to many new experiences, such as being able to assist my mom by picking up my sister from school or freely going out with friends. Although driving has been a great experience, I recognize that I can continue to improve by reducing my speed when necessary and paying closer attention to road signs. Driver’s education has significantly influenced the way I drive today, teaching me that driving is not just about gaining independence but also about accepting responsibility for my safety and the safety of others.
