I grew up in Utah my whole life and it’s known for a few things, mostly for its snow and all the winter activities it has to offer. Snow here can be intense and dangerous especially when driving. The need for reliable new snow tires is essential. Ice and slush are extremely dangerous. Any car despite its size and model can slide without the proper tires and driving concentration.
It was a dark snowing December night when I first encountered to death experience. I was 16 at the time, not an experienced driver at the time. My mother was driving us back home from a family friend’s home. Not many cars were on the road that day. She drove us back home in silence since she needed all the concentration, she needed to drive us back home safely. Unfortunately, another driver on the same roads we were on wasn’t as precautious and mindful of others on the road. A young man driving recklessly on the icy roads while being distracted by his phone. We were driving past a green light going about 30 mph. He failed to look up and didn’t realize that he had to stop because of the red light ahead of him. Going about 45 mph, he tried braking, but the ice and snow wouldn’t let him brake on time. He crashed straight into our car on the driver’s side. We spun around 3 times and hit the fence on the side of the road. It all happened so fast that I didn’t have time to comprehend what just happened. I looked over to my mom and she was in immediate pain. She dislocated her shoulder and had many cuts and wounds around the left side of her body. I broke my left arm when I extended it upon impact along with other injuries. Both cars involved were totaled. Looking back at the crash, I often asked myself how I walked away from that accident.
After the accident, we had many doctor’s appointments to attend and physical therapy. It slowed down our lives and we focused on our healing from all the injuries. We are so very thankful that this accident didn’t end our lives despite all the pain and stress that was placed upon us from the accident.
Distracted driving has left a consequential mark on my life through my own experiences and those of close family members and acquaintances who have fallen victim to this dangerous practice. The most heart-wrenching aspect is the loss of lives, life-altering results, and the enduring grief that ensues. When a loved one is lost due to a preventable accident, the pain is immeasurable and everlasting.
Beyond the immediate impact on individuals, distracting driving can change the lives of innocent families. The emotional toll is staggering as feelings of grief, guilt, and irrevocability can change their mental and emotional well-being. Effected families and I had to cope with the aftermath of a distracted driving incident that highlights the urgent need for comprehensive awareness and prevention strategies.
To bring awareness of distracted driving, a multi-faceted approach is necessary. Implementing comprehensive educational campaigns targeted at schools, colleges, and driving institutions is essential. Workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions can inform young drivers about the dangers of distraction and provide them with the skills needed to resist the temptations of mobile phones and other distractions while driving.
Since mobile phones are highly advanced in today’s time, there are ways that the mobile device can prevent the user from distraction. The development of smartphone applications that automatically disable distracting functions when a vehicle is in motion can act as a powerful tool. Such innovations can help responsible habits by making it technologically impossible to engage in distracting activities while driving.
Many youths are heavily influenced by music artists, athletes, social media influencers, and people with high social platforms. Most of their time is engaging in social media. I think increasing the influence of social media and popular culture by forming partnerships with influencers who resonate with the young demographic will make a tremendous difference. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter can be used to target these young drivers and truly capture the attention of distracted driving. Engaging influencers to share personal stories, statistics, and awareness messages through their platforms can significantly amplify the reach of anti-distracted driving campaigns, creating a culture of responsibility and mindfulness.
Young drivers should complete comprehensive training on the importance of focus and attention on the road. I recall my time in my driver's ed course in high school when my teacher would show us videos of fatal accidents that could have been preventable. It really moved all of us to watch those accidents as they can happen to us. Introducing simulation exercises that replicate real-world distractions can provide valuable hands-on experience, preparing young drivers for the challenges they may encounter.
In conclusion, distracted driving should be taken seriously as it can destroy lives, affecting individuals, families, and communities. Reflecting on the personal impact of this reckless behavior has highlighted the urgency for action. By implementing a combination of awareness-raising strategies and preventive measures, we can collectively address the causes of distracted driving and create a safer and more responsible driving culture among young individuals. Change begins with acknowledging the issue, promoting education, and creating a sense of shared responsibility to create a future where lives are no longer lost to the preventable tragedy of distracted driving.
