Greetings, my name is Justin, and in a single day, millions of people get behind the wheel of a car trusting that another driver on the road is doing the same. Unfortunately, car accidents are among the world’s leading causes of death and injury, with impaired driving being one of the main causes. When behind the wheel, drivers must be responsible and considerate to those on the road with them. In order to prevent the dire consequences of drunk driving, driving while under the influence, and other harmful driving behaviors, driver's education and traffic safety are crucial measures that prevent drivers from putting their lives and others' lives at risk.
Driver’s education is an essential first step for new drivers to safely enter the transportation world. Although many think of driver’s ed only as a means to obtain their license, traffic safety measures are vital to establishing a driver’s duty and relationship to the road that lasts long after the completion of the course. Driver safety courses instill in their students the importance of being safe on the road, which starts before a single mile is driven. Understanding the gravity of operating a two-and-a-half-ton vehicle is a pivotal part of beginning to responsibly navigate everyday traffic, and the comprehensive lessons taught in driver safety programs do just that. The importance of driving safety courses is that they establish the severe physical impact of car accidents as well as the moral obligation of drivers operating any vehicle on the road.
One of the most important lessons taught in traffic safety courses is the consequences of driving under the influence. For impaired driving, many people have little to no understanding of what it means to be affected by substances. In many ways, traffic safety courses eliminate ignorant misconceptions that people may have about driving while intoxicated. Courses teach students that there is never a right time or situation to drink and drive and give factual information about the biological effects substances have on the body when behind the wheel. With facts and figures from these programs, students are taught that driving while under the influence comes with severe consequences for both the driver and any bystanders affected by the car accident. Through courses, students are well aware that being intoxicated or under the influence of drugs severely hinders a driver's ability to operate a car safely, and is a direct cause of many car accidents every year.
Additionally, driver’s education provides students with the necessary steps to avoid driving under the influence. It is important for these courses to instruct students on practical ways to prevent driving while intoxicated to ensure that impaired driving never takes place. Driver safety education gives students the tools needed to prevent car accidents. For example, courses encourage students to plan ahead and have alternative transportation options if they are ever in a situation where they are too intoxicated to drive, such as a ride-share, taxi, or designated sober driver. Additionally, many traffic safety courses instruct students to take control if they know someone is trying to drive intoxicated and teach them to advocate against impaired driving. This awareness of safety is essential for drivers to maintain a high level of safety on and off the road.
In addition to teaching new drivers to be aware of their own level of intoxication, driver’s education also raises awareness of impaired drivers on the road. The importance of this aspect of traffic safety courses is that drivers are instructed to be extra cautious around drivers they suspect to be intoxicated. For example, drivers have to watch out for other cars on the road that may be swerving back and forth in their lane, tailgating, weaving through traffic, and other driving patterns that indicate the driver is not in full control of their senses. In driver’s education, students are taught that defensive driving is a key aspect of maintaining road safety in a world where not all drivers are focused on keeping everyone safe. In many cases, driver’s education courses prevent car accidents through both ends: driver’s ed decreases the amount of impaired driving on the roads and teaches those who are not under the influence to look out for those who are.
The ultimate importance of driver’s education and traffic safety is that they encourage a culture of safety on the road that will last for years to come. In driver safety courses, students are taught to operate a vehicle in a responsible and respectful manner to those around them. When drivers commit to maintaining their own standards on the road, they raise the bar for others and set new expectations for future generations of drivers. When drivers choose to not drive under the influence, they prevent car accidents, tragedies, and the devastation that comes with losing a loved one or damaging property.
Investing time and resources into providing new drivers with quality traffic safety education is one of the best ways to prevent unnecessary deaths and injuries on the road. As a responsible student in driver’s education, I understand my role as an upcoming driver to make the right choices for my own safety and the safety of others. When I continue to support and spread awareness of the advantages of driver’s education, I can make sure that our roads are always safe for our family and friends. Thank you for your time and consideration.
