Every Choice Behind the Wheel

Learning to drive is one of the biggest milestones in a teenager's life. Getting a driver's license brings freedom and independence, but it also comes with a great deal of responsibility. Every time someone gets behind the wheel, they are responsible not only for their own safety but also for the safety of their passengers, other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. That is why driver education is so important. It prepares new drivers to recognize dangerous situations, make smart decisions, and understand that one careless choice can change lives forever.

Driver education is about much more than learning how to parallel park or pass a driving test. It teaches drivers how to stay calm in stressful situations, recognize hazards before they become accidents, and understand the importance of defensive driving. Many crashes happen because someone was distracted, speeding, following too closely, or simply not paying attention. Driver education helps new drivers understand these risks before they experience them firsthand. The more prepared a driver is, the more likely they are to make safe decisions when faced with unexpected situations.

Reducing the number of driving-related deaths starts with education, but it also depends on personal responsibility. One of the most effective ways to make our roads safer is by eliminating distractions. Texting, checking notifications, changing music, or looking at a GPS for just a few seconds can take a driver's attention away from the road long enough for an accident to happen. Wearing a seat belt, obeying speed limits, avoiding impaired driving, and putting away distractions are simple choices that save lives every day.

Communities also play an important role in improving driver safety. Schools can continue teaching safe driving habits, parents can model responsible behavior behind the wheel, and experienced drivers can encourage young drivers to make good decisions. Safe driving should not end when someone passes their driving test. It is a skill that requires constant attention and good judgment throughout a person's life.

Although I have never been involved in a serious car accident, I have seen drivers make unsafe choices that could have easily ended differently. While driving to school, work, and extracurricular activities, I have seen people looking down at their phones while driving, speeding through traffic, and weaving between lanes without signaling. I have also been a passenger when someone became distracted by conversations or their phone instead of focusing on the road. Those moments reminded me that accidents often happen when people think, "It will only take a second."

As a newer driver, those experiences have made me much more aware of my own habits. I know how easy it is to become distracted, especially with phones, music, and navigation systems constantly competing for our attention. Because of that, I have made a conscious effort to build good habits from the beginning. Before I start driving, I set my playlist, enter my destination into GPS if I need directions, and put my phone where I will not be tempted to look at it. If I need to answer a message or make a phone call, I wait until I have safely parked.

Working part-time has also helped me understand the importance of responsibility. Whether I was working at Dunkin' or my current job at Unicoi State Park, people depended on me to arrive safely and on time. Driving responsibly is part of being dependable. I have learned that getting somewhere a few minutes earlier is never worth risking someone else's life.

Another way I can help make the roads safer is by setting a positive example for my friends. If someone gets into my car, everyone wears a seat belt before we leave. If I am riding with someone who is driving recklessly or becomes distracted, I know it is important to speak up. It may feel uncomfortable, but protecting someone's safety is more important than avoiding an awkward conversation. Sometimes reminding someone to slow down, put away their phone, or focus on the road could prevent a tragedy.

As I prepare to leave for college, I know I will be driving more often than ever before. I will be traveling to campus, driving home on weekends, and exploring new places. That independence also means accepting greater responsibility. I want to be known as someone who drives carefully, respects other people on the road, and understands that every decision behind the wheel matters.

Driver education gives people the knowledge they need to become safe drivers, but knowledge alone is not enough. Safe driving comes from choosing to apply those lessons every time you drive. It means staying focused, making responsible decisions, and remembering that every person on the road deserves to arrive home safely.

In the end, being a safe driver is not just about avoiding tickets or accidents. It is about protecting lives. Every trip, no matter how short, is an opportunity to make responsible choices. If more drivers committed to eliminating distractions, following traffic laws, and looking out for one another, our roads would be much safer. I believe that driver education is the foundation for those choices, and I am committed to continuing to build safe driving habits that will protect both myself and everyone around me.
