One major step that must be taken to reduce accidents is the elimination of this distracted driving. This irresponsible behavior not only directly puts the user in serious danger, but it also endangers every other driver and passenger they will pass. Similarly selfish behavior is shown when someone feels the need to operate a vehicle while under the influence of substances. No one driver is any better than another to the point where one can be distracted or intoxicated and still feel content with driving. People need to become more aware that these two situations can have consequences that are beyond anything that many everyday drivers have ever faced. Ultimately, a more informed population would make advancements toward lowering accident rates involving these conditions.
Enhancing the enforcement of existing traffic laws and implementing stricter penalties for violations can serve as a deterrent to irresponsible temptations. Increased police presence, especially in areas prone to accidents or where minor offenses like speeding is common, can contribute to better compliance with traffic regulations. Upgrading and maintaining road infrastructure can also play a crucial role in reducing accidents. This would include improving road signage, adding lighting to poorly lit areas, and implementing speed managing systems in residential zones. Well-designed and maintained roads contribute to safer driving conditions for all road users.
While I have been involved in a minor road collision as a passenger to a guardian of mine, I feel like a more influential story comes from the death of an alumni who attended my high school. This gentleman died 2 years after he graduated as a part of the graduating class of 2020. The alumnus had tragically passed away in a self-inflicted car accident caused by texting and driving. Although no one else was involved in the accident, his life was taken. This story is good to look back and reflect on because it shows how many people are truly affected by distracted driving. While I did mention there were no other parties involved in this incident, my high school community was deeply affected. The passing of this man, while it had not caused physical harm or pain to anyone, had caused grief within his family, his friends, and his community. The effects of distracted driving extended far beyond the immediate driver involved. The legacy of this alumnus should stand as a catalyst for change, illustrating that the impact of distracted driving is not confined to a single individual.
To become a better and safer driver while also contributing to the safety of others on the roads, I can take simple proactive steps. First and foremost, ongoing education is essential. Beyond my initial driver's education courses, staying informed about changes in traffic laws and advancements in safety precautions and techniques could enhance my own driving knowledge and skills. Addressing the rising concern of distracted driving, I can encourage others to practice focused driving and raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving to contribute to a culture of responsibility on the roads. Similarly, advocating against driving under the influence of substances is essential. Promoting awareness campaigns and supporting organizations that work towards preventing impaired driving can help create a safer driving environment. Sharing any of my experiences regarding driving with both beginners and long-time drivers can help stress the real-life consequences that decision-making while driving has on the world, on one's life, and the safety of others.
Prioritizing driver education and fostering more responsible drivers will surely lower the fatality rate on the roads. It is important that we recognize this issue and we reflect on and truly take the necessary steps to break some of the habits and reduce unsafe driving altogether.
