In The Driver’s Seat: The Lessons My Father Taught Me About Safe Driving

The freedom and independence that come with getting a license are frequently the first things that come to mind when individuals consider driving. But I've discovered that driving is much more than just a way to get around. It's a duty that calls for tolerance, awareness, and consideration for other people's lives. I learned about safe driving from seeing my father drive a taxi for more than eighteen years, not only from a textbook or a driving class. I've learned from his experiences, selflessness, and commitment that every choice a driver makes has the power to save or jeopardize someone's life. 

I saw my father leave the house every day as a child, knowing that he had a long and hard shift ahead of him. As a cab driver, he had to deal with a wide range of passengers, spend long hours on congested roads, and adjust to unforeseen circumstances. In order to provide for our family, Dad frequently drove for more than 14 hours. He never let weariness, stress, or frustration impair his driving, even if working such long hours left him exhausted. He always reminded me that safety is a driver's top priority. His view was straightforward: ensuring everyone arrived safely was always more important than any passenger, location, or timetable.

I learned from seeing my father that having the correct mindset is just as important to safe driving as obeying traffic laws. I have witnessed him maintain composure in congested areas, slow down in inclement weather, and be understanding of other drivers' mistakes. He showed me that being the most responsible driver is more important than being the fastest on the road. His behaviour demonstrated to me that a competent driver looks beyond themselves and recognizes how their decisions impact other families, cyclists, pedestrians, and passengers.

Because it prepares people for the responsibility that comes with operating a vehicle, driver education is crucial in lowering the number of driving-related deaths. Many accidents are avoidable and result from choices like speeding, driving while intoxicated, being distracted, or not knowing the conditions of the road. Drivers who are educated are better able to identify these risks before they become mistakes that could change their lives. My father has taught me that every route, circumstance, and choice is unique, so even seasoned drivers need to keep learning.

My father taught me many valuable things, one of which is that experience by itself does not ensure safety. He has been a professional driver for more than 18 years, but he still exercises caution and awareness. He does not believe that since he has been a driver for a long time, he is immune to accidents. Rather, he recognizes that responsibility never goes away and takes each journey seriously. This kind of thinking has changed my perspective on driving and helped me recognize the value of ongoing learning and development.

Reducing driving-related deaths can be achieved in a number of ways. First, rather than just teaching people how to pass a driving exam, driver education should concentrate more on real-world scenarios. Examples that illustrate the actual repercussions of making risky decisions should be used to teach new drivers about the risks associated with distracted driving, aggressive driving, weariness, and impaired driving. Additionally, it is important to urge drivers to adopt behaviours like putting down their phones, using seatbelts, adhering to speed limits, and exercising tolerance.

My father's experiences have also taught me the value of appreciating professional drivers and comprehending the difficulties they encounter. Drivers of delivery trucks, taxis, and many other vehicles put in long hours on the road, frequently under challenging circumstances. I've been more conscious of how crucial it is that everyone on the road be considerate after witnessing my father at work. One driver's reckless choice can have a profound effect on other lives.

I have seen instances where people near to me have driven recklessly, even though I have not personally been in a significant vehicle accident. I have witnessed people drive recklessly, become sidetracked by their phones, or underestimate the risks of taking needless chances. These incidents have brought to memory my father's advice that a car is strong and should never be used carelessly. Distraction for a few seconds might have lifelong repercussions.

I want to follow in my father's footsteps and become a driver who puts safety above convenience. I'll keep driving defensively, avoiding distractions, obeying traffic laws, and paying attention to my surroundings. By speaking up when I witness risky conduct, I also hope to inspire my friends and family to make safer decisions. As members of a community, we all have a part to play in ensuring safe driving.
