Youth Forward - Scholarship Opportunity for Exemplary Volunteers

I come from a family of compassionate educators and by following their examples, leadership and guidance, I understand the importance of sharing your skills and knowledge to help others. By devoting your time, talents, and treasures to advocate for others, I genuinely feel it can have a positive influence on people’s overall well-being and quality of life.  I am eager to pursue advanced studies and hands-on research in the fields of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Regenerative Biosciences to contribute to innovative medical interventions and patient care. Through my high school magnet program coursework (Academy of Research & Medical Sciences), job shadowing opportunities, and community service activities, I am extremely interested in pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.

Along with my challenging coursework in my stem-based courses, I have participated in over 350 hours of volunteer and community service opportunities. I want to choose a profession in which I help to educate and motivate people to be the absolute best version of themselves (physically, mentally, spiritually, etc.). As a VolunTeen at a local medical center, I interact with and assist patients of all ages, backgrounds, and needs. While working in the hospital setting, I observed that some patients did not have any family or friends to visit or call to check up on their status, numerous patients with health disparities/ illiteracies, and staffing burnout/shortages. As a volunteer, I contributed by providing support to the nursing staff on various units. I assisted with room setup for new admissions, fed patients, visited them at the bedside, and looked for expired medications. I also provided comfort items such as blankets and pillows, rounded on patients, and gave directions to visitors. I observed how an unexpected expense such as medical co-pay or a prescription, choosing between medicine or groceries or lacking insurance/money to afford healthcare can feel devasting. I knew there were prevalent issues and inequities in healthcare exist, but when you see it so directly, it is heartbreaking and makes you gain genuine empathy for these people. It truly makes me want to find a way to work towards making healthcare equitable and accessible for people regardless of their socio-economic status. In the fast-paced, high-stress environment of healthcare, I realized that true community impact is built through small, authentic actions. Whether it was guiding a worried family through the corridors or sitting with a lonely patient, I learned that healing requires both medical science and human connection. By volunteering, I wasn't just giving my time; I was actively investing in the well-being of the people around me. In a hospital, you meet people from every walk of life, often on their worst days. My goal from day one was to use my energy to make their experience just a little bit brighter. It doesn't require a medical degree or a grand gesture; it just requires a willingness to notice someone struggling and step in to help.

My goal is to be the pharmacist who helps patients navigate those impossible choices with compassion and expertise and being an accessible face of healthcare for someone who is in need. My experiences and exposure to various people and communities have taught me to first take the time to look inward, and as I make decisions, I choose to move forward in the world with kindness, determination, passion, and creativity.  I know that while we are imperfect, humanity always finds a way to shine through.

While my primary passion lies in community service and volunteerism, I recognize that public safety on our roads is a critical extension of civic responsibility. Driver education plays a vital role in reducing the number of traffic-related fatalities, which directly impacts the health and well-being of our neighborhoods. When individuals commit to being responsible, defensive drivers, they are actively participating in protecting their community. To promote road safety, I personally practice absolute distraction-free driving by keeping my phone completely out of reach while behind the wheel. Additionally, I advocate for strict adherence to speed limits and passenger safety rules among my peers. Just as volunteer work builds a stronger society, conscious driving ensures that we protect the lives of the people within it. By understanding the rules of the road and treating driving as a shared public privilege rather than a right, young drivers can drastically reduce accidents. Combining the selflessness of volunteerism with the awareness of smart driver education creates a safer environment for everyone.
