Teen Driving & Drivers Education




For good reasons, teen driver safety has been a significant public issue for a while now. Driver safety, in general, is paramount because car accidents can cause immense tragedies. When learning how to drive, it can be a risky task without the proper education. Unfortunately, countless accidents have resulted because of this fact. Teenage drivers are a part of this conversation due to their increased likelihood of being involved in crashes. Driver education helps reduce this risk by teaching teens essential driving skills, promoting safe habits, and addressing the unique challenges of inexperience. Teens may face various distractions that can be challenging when on the road.
Firstly, in today's world, our phones typically consume most of our time when we are awake. For starters, It is ordinary for teenagers to have a lengthy amount of screen time for much as being unemployed or still in high school. The environment that an individual is in may also affect their outward performance in many things, including driving. Recalling the last example, being on the road in a rough environment may be challenging and riskier. For example, say a teenager is hanging around friends who want to go out drinking, and afterwards plan on driving back home. In this particular example, no one seems to be sober, and now everyone is at risk of a car crash.
Another example may be a teenager who texts and drives, which minimizes their attention while driving. In both cases, the chance of an accident is extremely high and occurs more likely than in safer conditions. These challenges are not exclusive to teens, but are more likely to occur with teens if not addressed.
Addressing the previous challenges that teens may face can seem worrisome; however, there are ways to reduce such risks. Some ways of avoiding these issues are by removing distractions before driving. This can look like shutting your phone off before a drive or making sure someone is sober to drive home after going out for drinks. Another helpful way to reduce the likelihood of crashes is to take driver education seriously. The teen driver should ensure safety before a phone call, going out for drinks, or simply having fun. It may seem a bit daunting and or agitating, but it is not just the individual driver who may be at risk when on the road.
Recalling all that has been said on teen driver safety and the concerns that come with it, I am reminded of someone I know who was involved in a car accident due to some of the very issues discussed. My brother and his partner were subject to a car crash due to the teen drivers being distracted and speeding. According to the police report, the three individuals who hit my brother and his partner sped through a red light and hit the car. Eventually, when I discovered what had happened, I was relieved that my brother and his partner were physically unharmed. Still, the emotional toll was clear; the shock and fear lingered long after the accident. My brother was attempting at learning how to drive, and after the accident, he stopped moving for a couple of months out of fear. I mentioned this to make a point that the aftermath of car crashes does not leave only physical impacts but also mental ones. Driving safety education is incredibly important and should be taken seriously.
Earlier, I mentioned some ways teen drivers could reduce the risks of accidents and create a safer environment on the road. A few more ways schools and communities could contribute. Some of the ways schools can get involved are by having driver education assemblies and introducing teens to driver safety earlier in life. These assemblies would help teens grow in their knowledge of how to help themselves and others stay safe while on the road. Another helpful tactic could be incorporating a small driver's education class that is mandatory to take. These methods taken by school systems would be a game-changer for future drivers. Now, communities can unite and urge their mayors and legislators to prioritize and promote driver safety even more. This would ensure that larger statements could be made about the topic, and the seriousness of drivers' safety may increase.
With diligence and focus, the risks associated with teen driving and the importance of driver education can be addressed meaningfully; helping teenagers, regardless of their challenges, and protecting others on the road. These issues may not disappear overnight; however, positive change can make a difference and save lives.
