The danger of being complacent when it comes to your own safety

2026 Driver Education Round 1

Laws have been made to regulate vehicles on the road for the safety of all people and yet thousands of people die from automobile incidents every year. Automobiles have been around for more than 100 years however people have forgotten the privilege of owning a car and have become complacent and lazy when it comes to the safety of owning what is a dangerous piece of machinery.

While vehicles have become so integrated into modern life with most people owning a car, people have forgotten that a car going simply 30km/h or what is commonly limited to school zones can still seriously injure someone despite how slow it feels to drive in such speed. despite how slowly driving in a school zone feels from the receiving end it is equivalent to the speed of being tackled by Usain Bolt running at you while covered in metal, despite this there are many people going over the speed limit in both school zones and regular roads. With cars being driven with negligence it could be said that 100 years is not enough time for a perfected rulebook to be made to regulate its dangers since with so many people now owning a vehicle any major changes can affect many people all at once which could make short term dangers even worse even if it had long term goals in mind. However, the simple lightbulb and electricity had been invented before cars were first invented and yet their safety has been handled far better.

Electricity while not being as shocking to hear on the news unlike a car crash is still a very much a hazardous substance to work with, since a electrical burn very much like a car crash could injure or kill someone in a moment, however far more people are aware and cautious of live wires and open outlets. Speaking to any child, it is likely you will get a response of being cautious of sparking lights or never putting a fork in the outlet, and yet education for vehicle safety seems to have been undervalued when it comes to youth culture as they are growing up. With the access of the internet, it could be said that dangerous stunts have been romanticized with high speed being seen as something that makes you look good and impressive to others despite its danger. With high speed being dangerous, car safety has been greatly improved from its initial launch 100 years ago with one of its most important parts of any vehicle you will find on the road being the airbag. A cushion to break the force when you are halted and crash is a simple but brilliant invention for road safety and have saved thousands of people across the world, but this safety option is no excuse to drive recklessly.

Despite the airbag being a great safe mechanism that has become standard in all vehicles driven across the world it is not a foolproof tool with many people still having life threatening injuries after its usage if not still being killed during the impact. With the idea of a cushion protecting you in the back of your mind it could be said people are too trusting and compliant in its failsafe which causes them to be more reckless. To this the importance of safe driving is the fact that despite a cushion being there to protect you, you are still being hit by that padding that is moving at 50 kilometers if not faster. For an additonal analogy the boxing gloves are made with thick padding underneath and yet boxers have been knocked out unconscious and some have even died due to such force despite the padding. While airbags is an integrated part of all vehicles that is set to go off when in danger, another safety mechanism made in vehicles would be the seatbelt. A mechanism made to keep the person from flying out the vehicle if crashed that can save your life since if the initial hit from the car's collision does not injure you, being sent out your windshield for not wearing your seatbelt will. With that said some people choose not to wear their seatbelts as well despite it taking less than five seconds to put on and could save your life if you are in a incident.

Education for the safety of drivers could be said has been affected by the current generations culture or the lack of exposure in youth however safety in a highly dangerous piece of machinery that is plated in heavy steel and can move 100 kilometers per hour is still significant and should not be taken for granted and its rules and laws be seen as something that is finished. Education for the safety of vehicle usage should be seen as something of most importance since no matter how safely someone drives it does not have to be your mistake that will get you hurt.
