I personally feel like
driver education is extremely important because driving is a big responsibility. When you’re behind the wheel, it’s not just your life that you’re responsible for. You also have to think about your passengers and everybody else on the road. I feel like a lot of accidents could be avoided if people would slow down, pay attention, and actually follow the rules. Learning to drive should be about more than just passing a test and getting your license.
I think driver education helps people understand how quickly things can go wrong. You need to know the signs, the rules, and what to do if something unexpected happens. But I also feel like people need to understand the consequences of being careless. Just because you’ve been driving for years doesn’t mean you can’t make a mistake. Sometimes people get too comfortable and start doing things they know they shouldn’t be doing.
There are so many simple things people can do to make the roads safer. Wear your seat belt, follow the speed limit, don’t text and drive, and never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or using drugs. I know we’ve all heard these things over and over, but clearly some people still aren’t listening. I don’t understand why anybody would think looking at a phone is more important than keeping their eyes on the road. A
text message can wait. Somebody’s life can’t.
Another big problem, in my opinion, is how impatient people are when they’re driving. Everybody wants to get where they’re going as fast as possible. I understand being late for work or having somewhere important to be, but speeding and cutting people off aren’t going to help anybody. Even getting angry at another driver can turn into something dangerous. Sometimes it’s better to just let somebody go ahead of you rather than get into an argument or try to prove a point.
As a woman with a disability, I look at driving safety a little differently because I sometimes have to depend on other people for transportation. When I’m riding with someone, I’m trusting them to get me where I need to go safely. I shouldn’t have to worry about whether they’re paying attention or making careless choices. It’s scary to think that you could be doing absolutely nothing wrong and still end up hurt because somebody else wasn’t being responsible.
Being a mother makes me think about this even more. Every time someone gets behind the wheel, there are people who expect them to make it back home. When someone dies in a car accident, their family is left to deal with that loss. Their children might have to grow up without a parent, or a parent might have to bury their child. That’s heartbreaking, especially when the accident could have been prevented. I wish more drivers would stop and think about that before taking unnecessary risks. That’s something I take very seriously.
I also think people need to be more aware of what’s happening around them. You can be following all the rules and still come across a driver who isn’t. That’s why it’s important to leave enough space between cars, check your mirrors, and pay attention to the weather and road conditions. You can’t control everybody else’s actions, but you can do your best to protect yourself and the people riding with you.
For me, being a better driver would mean taking my time, staying focused, and not allowing myself to get distracted. I would rather leave early and arrive safely than rush and possibly cause an accident. I would also want my children to understand these things as they get older. I don’t want them thinking that speeding or checking a phone while driving is normal just because they see adults doing it.
I also feel like we have to speak up when somebody we’re riding with is being irresponsible. If a friend or family member is speeding or constantly looking at their phone, I would rather say something than sit there uncomfortable and hope nothing happens. They might not like hearing it, but safety is more important than somebody getting upset for a minute.
Overall, I believe driver education is important, but what really matters is whether people actually use what they’ve learned. We all have places to go and things to do, but none of that is worth somebody losing their life. At the end of the day, getting there safely should always be the priority.
