At the age of ten my life took an unexpected turn on the way to a movie night with my family. What was supposed to be a fun night with family came to an end when we were involved in a car accident, a strong collision caused by a distracted driver who failed to notice a red light. Not only was our night ruined but it became very serious to us when we realized that there was a possibility that we could have died. The driver's inability to pay attention had physically damaged my parents and caused issues even after the accident. While I emerged physically unharmed, my parents were not as fortunate as they already had back and neck pains, the accident escalated their conditions, intensifying the struggle they already were facing constantly. The damage to our car, though covered by insurance, created additional challenges because within those few weeks of only having one car, my parents, who worked at different places with different hours, found it difficult to commute to their jobs and had to rely on family members and coworkers to get them to work or to get back home.
This moment in my life made me realize how important it is to be a good driver and to always be aware of your surroundings, and by shaping my perspective on road safety, it helped me become a responsible driver that doesn’t put people at risk. Today, as a driver, I follow all the safety measures like always wearing my seatbelt, not using my phone while driving, staying aware of my surroundings, and obeying speed limits.
The significance of driver education became apparent in the aftermath of that accident as it seemed that when I told the stories to others, when they heard that the lady who caused the accident, it was brushed off or treated lighter than expected. It undervalued the need for comprehensive and effective driver education programs to instill awareness of their surroundings as well as driving laws and regulations. A lack of knowledge about road rules contributes significantly to the alarming rate of accidents people witness every day.
Distracted driving, particularly phone usage behind the wheel, remains an important issue. In my accident, the driver's negligence was because of phone distraction, a preventable cause that has become an increasing problem in today's technologically driven society. Addressing this requires to first approach the driver education that emphasizes the dangers of distracted driving and instills responsible habits to see how it can make changes to itself to further prepare people for the rules of the road.
One of the key challenges is the attitude toward seatbelt usage, a simple yet life-saving measure, yet many drivers still persist to not wear it and among those drivers who underestimate the importance of seatbelts, putting themselves and others at risk. Those drivers also don’t follow the speed limit law.
Another important law that is not followed yet is highly important is speed limits. Inadequate knowledge or recklessness of speed regulations contributes significantly to accidents. Enhanced driver education should focus on creating a culture of responsibility and respect for speed limits, recognizing the role they play in preventing accidents and saving lives and to also make them recognize that if they don’t follow the rules that the consequences will be severe.
A part of the reason why so many don’t follow the law now is because they know the consequences if they are caught aren’t severe. Stricter punishments can serve as a deterrent, discouraging reckless behavior on the roads. It is essential to address not only the immediate consequences of an accident but also the long-term repercussions that affect victims and their families, as my own family experienced.
To start making a difference, the driver education program should adopt a more thorough approach, involving real-life scenarios so that these future drivers will make a connection on how a few seconds of not following the rules can cause them or someone else to be seriously harmed. Driving education should do this while incorporating practical driving experience, perhaps through extended supervised driving periods, can better prepare new drivers for the challenges they may encounter on the roads or ones they might not encounter as much just to prepare them in case it happens.
