Driver Safety Affects Us All

As a teenager, getting your license is the next big achievement. It screams adulthood. Once we get these cards, ensuring we are legally allowed to drive, the next stage of our life begins, and we will never go back. Driving safely is not only knowing which pedal is the gas and which is the brake. It is also understanding traffic laws, anticipating other drivers' actions, and knowing how to respond in case of an emergency. While fewer than one percent of all reported car accidents are fatal, those crashes still take the lives of tens of thousands of people each year. This shows that even though the odds of a fatal crash may seem small, the consequences of unsafe driving can be irreversible. Driver education is important because it teaches people the knowledge needed to safely drive a vehicle and helps decrease the risk of accidents. Even the smallest mistake can cause a regrettable moment. 

In 2025, an estimated 36,640 people lost their lives in vehicle crashes in the U.S. Although this number has decreased compared to previous years, it remains devastatingly high, showing that traffic deaths continue to be a major concern. Every decision behind the wheel has consequences. Some people do not realize that a few seconds of carelessness on the road can lead to lifelong dread. Driving under the influence, with others distracting you, with devices holding your attention, etc., are all examples of unsafe driving that reduce the driver’s responsibility on the road. There are many specifics people can improve on; it is just the lack of willingness they have. That is why it needs to be spoken about throughout the world to everyone who drives a vehicle. However, it is important to remember that no matter how well a person drives, an accident may not always be their fault. That is why it is important to be mindful of the drivers around you.  

In Florida, it is required by the state to take a permit course if you are under the age of 18. This course ensures you learn “core Florida traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, substance abuse awareness, and how to safely share the road with other vehicles,” as stated by the State of Florida website. Starting off young, it is expected of teenagers to know how driving on the road works and every detail that goes with it. Drivers over the age of 18 must complete an in-person exam with a minimum score of 80% before advancing to the required behind-the-wheel evaluation and drug and alcohol awareness course. This is evidence that no matter what efforts one may make to stay safe on the road, reckless driving can be done by anyone.  

I have seen firsthand how dangerous driving can be for all ages. Can you be confident enough in your driving to trust others around you? I have personally been in a severe, life-threatening crash due to the driver speeding and slamming into the side of the highway. Something so serious can change people’s lives, so being a responsible driver is something everyone should prioritize. To reduce these types of risks, implementing a safety driving course with drivers over the age of 70 can help ensure they maintain the skills needed to drive safely, making sure we are securing our seatbelts as soon as we enter the vehicle, increasing DUI enforcement, installing speed cameras, and repairing damaged/older roads can all be a start.  

The safety of lives is the most important matter when driving. Driving may entail freedom, but it is also done with a thousand-pound vehicle that we trust our lives with. The second the driver’s attention leaves the road, the greater the chance that one careless decision could change or end a life forever. While accidents may not always be avoidable, drivers have the power to reduce unnecessary risks by making responsible choices every time they get behind the wheel. Safe driving is not only about protecting yourself, but also about protecting the families, passengers, and strangers who you share the road with. A license gives someone the ability to drive, but responsibility is what makes someone a safe driver. 

Crashes affect more than just the bodies in the vehicles. They affect the families of each loved one, the survivors of the crash, and the financial/emotional struggles after injuries. The mental toll people experience after crashes can cause emotional dysregulation and unnecessary burdens. Families will struggle with grief and heartache because of accidents on the road. It is unfair to their loved ones and drivers who may have lost their lives. Behind every crash is a story, a family, and a life forever changed.
