In the Driver’s Seat

When I was younger, getting my license seemed like one of the biggest milestones I could reach. I wasn’t thinking about safety statistics or traffic laws. I was thinking about freedom. I wanted to be able to get where I needed to go without always asking for a ride. I think that’s how a lot of teenagers feel when they start driving.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized driving is one of those things that people can take for granted. Most of us get in a car every day and don’t think twice about it. The truth is that driving comes with a lot of responsibility. You’re operating something that can seriously hurt you or someone else if you’re not paying attention.

Living in Philadelphia, I’ve seen drivers do things that make no sense. I’ve seen people run red lights because they didn’t want to wait another minute. I’ve seen drivers looking down at their phones when traffic is moving. I’ve seen people speeding through neighborhoods where families and kids live. Most of the time nothing happens, but sometimes it does. That’s the scary part. One bad decision can change someone’s life forever.

I think a lot of accidents happen because people get too comfortable. They drive the same routes every day and start feeling like nothing bad can happen to them. They think checking a text message will only take a second. They think driving a little faster won’t matter. They think they’re good enough drivers to get away with it. The problem is that accidents don’t give you a warning before they happen.

For me, one of the biggest things about safe driving is simply paying attention. That sounds obvious, but it really isn’t. There are distractions everywhere. Phones, music, passengers, and even stress can take your focus away from the road. When you’re driving, your attention needs to be where you are, not somewhere else.

I work at Foot Locker in King of Prussia, and having a job has taught me a lot about responsibility. If I’m scheduled to be somewhere, people are counting on me to show up. Driving is similar. Other people are counting on you to make smart decisions. The people driving next to you trust that you’re paying attention. Your family trusts that you’re going to get home safely. That’s not something I take lightly.

I also think young drivers sometimes feel pressure to impress their friends. Nobody wants to admit it, but it happens. Whether it’s driving faster than you should, showing off, or taking unnecessary risks, those decisions usually aren’t worth it. A few seconds of trying to look cool can lead to consequences that last much longer.

One thing that stands out to me about the statistics on driving deaths is that every number represents a real person. It’s easy to hear a large number and not really think about it. But every one of those people had a family, friends, plans, and goals. When you look at it that way, safe driving becomes a lot more personal.

Driver education is important because it helps people understand what’s at stake. Learning how to drive is about more than passing a test. It’s about developing habits that keep you and everyone else safe. Things like wearing a seatbelt, following speed limits, staying off your phone, and paying attention might seem basic, but they save lives.

As I get ready to attend Hampton University, I know driving will continue to be part of my life. I’ll have more independence and more responsibilities than ever before. That’s one reason I think it’s important to develop good habits now. The decisions I make behind the wheel today are the same habits I’ll carry with me in the future.

To me, being in the driver’s seat means more than controlling a car. It means being responsible for the choices you make. It means understanding that getting somewhere a few minutes faster is never worth risking someone’s life. Most people don’t expect to be involved in an accident, but that’s exactly why safe driving matters. The best drivers aren’t the ones who take the most risks. They’re the ones who stay focused, make smart decisions, and get everyone home safely.

At the end of the day, driving gives people freedom, but that freedom comes with responsibility. The more I’ve learned about driving, the more I’ve realized that being a safe driver isn’t just about protecting yourself. It’s about protecting everyone who shares the road with you. That’s why being a safe and educated driver is so important, and it’s a responsibility I plan to take seriously for the rest of my life.
