Being a safe and educated driver is something everyone who gets behind a wheel should aspire to be. You don't have control over those on the road around you, though, being educated in how you drive can protect your life and others in numerous ways. Part of learning safe driving techniques is also learning defensive driving skills. These techniques will help you to protect yourself around those who aren't as educated on the road. Being in scary situations can also test your reflexes and agile thinking skills. The safe driver education classes can help prepare you for these moments so you are more likely to react effectively.
Safe driving is something that is stressed to new and experienced drivers, yet, the suggestion to attend safe driving education classes is often not mentioned. This is because many people are not aware of the opportunities to do so. Many “expert” drivers have never thought about the idea of re-enrolling in drivers ed. This is because they think they know everything they need to know or they may not know this is even an option. Driving safely is a topic that has an endless amount of beneficial information. You will never get to a point in which it wouldn’t benefit you to attend these classes. I believe drivers ed companies also need to advertise the fact that you can go through the process again so that more people are aware.
Whether you believe you are a safe and educated driver or not, things happen. Those around you on the road may not be driving to their highest standard. Weather can also take a serious toll on driving effectively and safely. This topic is very dear to me as I lost a friend of mine 3 weeks ago to a tragic car accident. She had so much more life to give but it was taken from her. She was a new driver and was so exhilarated to begin this new journey. While no one was in the car with her, I wholeheartedly believe she was doing everything in her power to be a safe driver. The road conditions that morning were very slick. It was something that could have been prevented but was also out of her hands. We don't have control of the weather but we do have control of how we go about driving in this weather.
If the weather is bad, don't go. Your life is more valuable. Many people think that even though the weather is bad they will be fine. Other people might need to stay off the roads but their skills are up to date and they know how to adjust their driving to suit the weather and road conditions. Nonetheless, no matter how skilled your driving is you should still aim to stay off the roads. The road conditions are something that can vary from every location. Even if the news tells you that the roads are slightly slick, where you drive may be very slick. You should always go into driving expecting to use your defensive and cautious skills.
With that being said, there may be times you need to get on the road when it's bad. Some situations can be prevented or postponed due to weather. Driving during this requires you to slow down, use signals early, and use your best judgement. Safe Driving education, such as drivers ed, can help you to understand what you need to adjust within your driving when in bad weather conditions. It can also help test your judgement to prepare you for when you need to do this on the road. Other weather skills, such as pumping your brakes on icy roads, will be taught to you in extended driver education.
Safe driving education and re-education is not something that should be normalized. As time goes on, less and less people prioritize this, which in return puts road safety conditions at an all high risk. Choose to protect yourself and those around you. Choose to be prepared and safe. Choose the drivers education courses.
