It's Better To Be Late Than Dead

2026 Driver Education Round 1

Every time we get behind the wheel, we make a choice about what kind of driver we are going to be. We can choose to be patient, attentive, and responsible, or we can let distractions and risky decisions put ourselves and others in danger. Although most people do not expect to be involved in a serious accident, the reality is that many crashes are preventable. I believe one of the best ways to reduce the number of driving-related deaths is through strong driver education and a commitment from every driver to practice what they have learned.
Driver education is important because it ensures that everyone is on the same page about the laws and common practices of the road. When drivers understand traffic laws, right-of-way rules, road signs, and different driving techniques, they know what to expect from other drivers. This, in turn, makes our roads safer because there is less confusion and fewer opportunities for fatal mistakes. Driver education also builds confidence. A driver who understands how to react in different situations is more likely to stay calm and make smart decisions instead of panicking when something unexpected happens. Surprise is one of the most dangerous emotions to feel while driving, as it distracts us and makes us unpredictable.
However, learning how to drive safely is only the beginning. Reducing the number of deaths related to driving depends on every driver making the choice to be responsible every time they get behind the wheel. We must always pay attention, stay vigilant, and never assume another driver is being as careful as we are. One lesson I have learned is that you have to look out for yourself on the road because no one else will do it for you. Even if I am following every traffic law, I still have to watch for drivers who may be speeding, distracted, or making unsafe decisions. I could be involved in a tragic accident on the road even if I do everything right. Defensive driving is not about expecting the worst from people, but rather it's about being prepared in case someone else makes a mistake and being confident enough in ourselves to handle it appropriately.
I also believe distracted driving is one of the biggest dangers on our roads today. Looking at a phone, changing music, eating, or even becoming too involved in a conversation can take a driver's attention away from the road for just a few seconds. Those few seconds may not seem like much, but they can be the difference between arriving safely and causing a devastating accident. If we truly want to reduce driving-related deaths, eliminating distracted driving must be a priority.
Although thankfully I have never been involved in a severe car accident, I have seen friends and family members drive irresponsibly. Sometimes they drive faster than necessary or make questionable maneuvers because they want to get somewhere more quickly. While those decisions may save a minute or two, they also increase the risk of an accident. Watching these situations has reminded me that convenience should never be more important than safety. There is no destination that is worth risking someone's life.
As I continue gaining experience behind the wheel, I want to develop habits that make me a safer driver. One of the most important reminders I can give myself is that it is always better to arrive a few minutes late than to never arrive at all because of dangerous or distracted driving. I also plan to keep my phone out of reach whenever I am driving so I am not tempted to check notifications. Beyond this, I will even turn on “Do Not Disturb” so that I don’t hear a single buzz. Before I leave, I will queue up a playlist that I know I will not want to skip, so I will not be distracted by changing songs while I am on the road. Most importantly, I will remain vigilant at all times and continue looking out for myself and those around me.
Safe driving is not just about following the law. It's about recognizing that every decision behind the wheel has the potential to affect someone else's life. Driver education provides the knowledge we need, but it is our responsibility to apply those lessons every day. By staying alert, eliminating distractions, and remembering that no destination is worth risking a life, each of us can help make our roads safer. I may only be one driver, but I believe that if every driver made these same commitments, we would see far fewer tragedies on our roads.
