Driving: Your Life Is Worth It

In
driving the first step is knowledge or education. Around the age of
15 most teens sign up to take the permit test. This test gages your
knowledge for the rules of the road, meaning of signs, and what to do
in certain scenarios. In the months following the successful passing
of the permit test, teens learn to drive through firsthand
experience, are required to drive in differing weather conditions,
and are eventually tested for their driver license. Knowledge is key
to preparing drivers for the massive responsibility of driving and
ensuring the safety of everyone on the road.

There
are many laws and precautions put in place to prevent fatal car
crashes, including speed limits, seat belt regulations, and drunk
driving rules. Sadly, the main cause of many accidents is ignorance
towards these laws. I think there are a multitude of ways to reduce
the number of deaths related to driving. There could be a mandatory
ride share call for individuals who are planning to drive but are
intoxicated beyond to legal limit and more patrol of areas with
frequent accidents, to name a few. Overall reinforcement of the laws
and regulations put into place for drivers and passengers should be
increased.

At
the age of 12 I witnessed an almost fatal car accident, when I was on
the way to the movies with my father. The people in the car in front
of us included a mom and her two young daughters. We were both trying
to make a left hand turn across a busy intersection. There was a car
speeding from the opposite lane and to my horror the car in front of
us made a lastminute decision to take the turn. The two cars collided
with such impact that the car with the mother and children flipped
onto its side. The other car’s airbags ejected, and the hood bent
to about 75 degrees. My father made the left turn and parked the car
on the side of the street, and along with several other strangers
helped physically flip the car back into the rightful position will
someone else called 911. The mother wasn’t wearing a seatbelt but
only suffered minor scratches, and luckily the two little girls were
strapped into their car seats. This accident could have been fatal
due to speeding and bad decisions.

There
are many steps that I take to be a safer driver which include,
maintaining the speed limit, limiting distractions like loud music,
and making sure that everyone in my car wears their seatbelts. I am
always mindful of who I ride with. With other people I try to remind
them of the speed limit and prevent the use of distractions like cell
phones. I always drive and ride safely because my life and the lives
of others on the road are worth it.
