The
affects of reckless driving hurt society in a multitude of ways. Most
notably, reckless driving is a leading cause of deaths in America.
This can be changed by emphasizing the importance of driver
education. Drivers ed teaches people the importance of knowing
exactly what to do when on the road. Simple things such as going the
speed limit and using a blinker can be so easily overlooked that
drivers will develop bad habits and increase the likelihood of
accidents. Therefore, it is of great standing that drivers be
educated on driving laws and alertness on the road.
Statistically,
there is a higher percentage of annual deaths caused by driving than
deaths caused by war in Iraq and Afghanistan. This shocking research
tells people that there needs to be steps taken to reduce the amount
of highway and automobile fatalities. Respectably, government
officials and communities should push for stricter laws on texting
and driving. This issue correlates to drivers of both young and old
age. Most people today have cell phones and electronic devices that
can become distracting during driving time. One’s full attention is
needed to operate a vehicle safely. But the power of self-control can
be abused when it comes to putting the phone down and waiting to get
home before sending out a text. The enforcement of driving the speed
limit is also needed nowadays as people tend to drive without
boundaries and are teaching themselves to push the limits.
Having
lived in a third world country, I can proudly say that Americans are
not the worst drivers. I witnessed multiple fatal motorcycle
accidents in Uruguay that led to death. People in other countries
tend to be more lenient and careless with their driving as it is a
less demanding mode of transportation. When arriving to America,
where almost each household owns at least one car, I could tell that
driving is a more serious subject. In my experience with driving and
being driven around in different geographic locations, I find that
drivers always struggle most with becoming careless and not staying
alert. The reality is that the latter is hard to point out to every
person in society. With just one irresponsible and simple mistake,
someone’s life can be taken away or changed forever.
Reckless
driving is a red flag for road safety and responsible driving. As an
active member at my local high school and in the community, I would
like to see more young people inspire others to stay attentive while
driving. To be a better and safer drive, I can follow the speed limit
and be patient with time. This meaning that I slow down on time when
approaching red lights and check my blind spot when changing lanes.
As these few steps may come natural to some people, many accidents
are caused due to lack of focus on surroundings. By being cautious
and responsible, I would hope to be inspired and inspire to stay safe
on the roads.
