Many
people know the basic rules and regulations of driving, but many
others do not know recommendations that could save their lives. In
order to reduce the number of deaths as a result of driving we need
to do a better part educating drivers on updates on rules and
regulations. Just by educating the public on driving safely we can
reduce the amount of accidents.

I
have done my part taking steps in educating people about driving
safely during harvest through a farm safety presentation given to
eighth graders at the Clarinda Middle School. I taught them to be
cautious of farm equipment on roadways and how to prepare for the
situation if they ever meet a farmer on the road. Parents should also
be educated about new car seat regulations and proper placement of
seatbelts. New recommendations by pediatricians suggest leaving your
child rear facing for as long as possible, four years is the
suggested time. They also suggest not having coats, covers, or toys
in children’s car seats. Pediatricians stress that the harness clip
goes across the chest of the child, not too low on the stomach.
Knowing new recommendations like those could save a child’s life.

My
freshman year of high school while driving with a school permit, I
was in a car accident. I was driving over a hill with loose gravel
and lost control. I was not educated on the dangers of loose gravel
and how it affects your car while driving on it. To avoid accidents
high school students should be required to drive on rural roadways
during drivers ed, even if they don’t regularly have to drive on
them. Luckily, I was unharmed during the accident and able to educate
my peers by sharing my story.

I
can be a safer driver by making sure that everyone in my vehicle is
secured properly in their seats. I am a babysitter and I regularly
must transport children to their activities. I make sure that their
seatbelt harness goes across their chest in a rear facing car seat,
they take off their coats before getting strapped in, and they are
always in the proper car seat. Knowing the proper car seat for the
height, weight, and age of children is very important in keeping them
safe. I am able to use my experience to educate others on how to be
safer drivers, resulting in a reduction of the number of deaths as a
result of driving.
