The
ultimate victory during any commute is to get to your destination
without any hurt, harm, or danger. Impulsively, that is the goal of
any driver and no one really expects an accident at any time. Being
attentive is not the only way one can execute safe driving; knowing
and understanding the importance of drivers ed is the first
step in becoming a safe driver.
Every
year, nearly 1.2 million people die due to car-related accidents.
This trend has continued to fluctuate over the years, but it has not
been consistently low. Yes, there are hundreds of programs and laws
to combat against hazardous driving habits, but more things can be
done. Obeying speed limits should go without saying, but drivers
simply do not adhere to this elementary rule. Distractions, including
the use of cell phones, is one of the most popular issues while
driving, especially amongst young drivers. Eating, changing the radio
station, or merely picking up something off the floor of the car can
cause detrimental consequences. Staying focused and waiting will
guarantee secure travels.
Recently,
I was a victim of a car accident. I was on my way home from work and
I came to an intersection preparing to make a left turn. Due to
oncoming traffic flowing from the other direction, I proceeded to
stop, turning on my left signal. While waiting for the opportunity to
turn, I looked in my rear- view mirror and all I could see were
beaming headlights, then I heard the continuous, loud squealing of
car brakes also quickly approaching. Believing that the car would
eventually stop, I looked forward once again. But without warning, I
was rammed in the rear by a huge SUV. My car lunged forward, spinned
and ended up on the side of the road. I screamed: I was afraid and
from the utter shock of what just transpired! I was able to walk away
from the accident without a scratch or a bruise, and I give all the
credit to God. I sat there and did not move until the driver of the
SUV that hit me came up to my window and asked if I was all right.
The driver was young and I recognized him. I finally realized that he
went to my school. He followed by saying, “I’m so sorry, my
brakes went out.”
To
acquire safe driving habits, I’m currently using the Steer
Clear
app by State Farm. This app allows me to record every trip I take,
and provides immediate feedback on what I did well and what I need to
work on during the drive. By completing the lessons provided, and
tracking my trips, I have received a safe driving discount on my
parents’ insurance because I am efficiently putting my driver
education to use. I believe that this, along with other aspects of my
life will allow me to make a difference and be an example to young
and mature drivers. Successful drives will, inevitability save many
lives.
