Lives Matter

Safe driving is important for several reasons, as it directly affects the well-being of individuals, passengers, and the broader community. Safe driving can be overlooked by many because driving is in our daily routine, something that we do everyday with little thought. Some reasons why safe driving is crucial are that it protects lives, reduces injuries, prevents property damage, saves money, enhances public safety, reduces traffic congestion, promotes mental health, preserves the environment, and increases community well-being.

Safe driving practices help prevent accidents and reduce the risk of injury or death to yourself, your passengers, and other road users. Motor vehicle accidents are a leading cause of fatalities worldwide, and responsible driving can significantly lower this toll. In addition to fatalities, motor vehicle accidents can cause a wide range of injuries, from minor cuts and bruises to severe trauma. Safe driving practices can minimize the severity and frequency of these injuries. Safe driving helps prevent damage to vehicles, road infrastructure, and other property. This reduces repair costs and the burden on insurance companies and taxpayers. Safe driving can lead to lower insurance premiums and reduced out-of-pocket expenses associated with accidents, traffic violations, and vehicle repairs. It also saves money by improving fuel efficiency and reducing wear and tear on vehicles. Responsible driving contributes to overall public safety by reducing the risk of accidents that can impact innocent bystanders, pedestrians, and cyclists. Aggressive or reckless driving behaviors, such as speeding and tailgating, can lead to traffic congestion and gridlock. Safe driving helps maintain a smoother flow of traffic. Avoiding dangerous driving behaviors reduces stress and anxiety for both drivers and passengers, contributing to better mental health and overall well-being. Safer driving practices, such as obeying speed limits and avoiding aggressive driving, can lead to reduced fuel consumption and emissions, helping to protect the environment. Violating traffic laws and engaging in unsafe driving behaviors can result in legal consequences, including fines, license suspension, and even imprisonment. Safe driving helps individuals avoid these penalties. Safe driving contributes to a safer and more pleasant community. It fosters a culture of respect, consideration, and cooperation on the roads. Practicing safe driving sets a positive example for others, including children and new drivers, encouraging them to adopt responsible driving habits. Safe driving enables emergency responders to reach accident scenes more quickly and effectively, potentially saving lives in critical situations.

Personally, this topic affects me at an emotional level. My childhood best friend was killed in a car accident from not driving safely and without a seatbelt. She mentally was not well and decided to go for a drive to “cool off”. While getting into the car, her knowledge of safe driving was not a first thought. She forgot to buckle her seat belt and drove off carelessly. Because of her emotional state, anger took over the wheel. She sped down a slick back road at a reckless speed in the night. A deer in headlights appeared as she grasped the steering wheel and swerved. Slamming into a tree, her body was ejected from the driver’s seat through the window, landing on the road. As her body was lying there, unable to move, another set of headlights came around the corner. This driver was intoxicated and was delayed to see her there on the road. Violently, the car drove right over her, ending her life. Not only did this event affect her family, but it affected the community. This incident has affected me closely because I lost a loved one, and also a friend. I have only been driving for around a year, but still think about how quickly a life can be taken but of careless acts. No family, friend, or community should have to mourn over a loss, all due to someone not paying attention.

Overall, safe driving is a collective responsibility that benefits not only individuals but society as a whole. Adhering to traffic laws, avoiding distractions, obeying speed limits, and driving defensively are essential steps toward ensuring safer roads and a better quality of life for everyone. Not taking your time to think, rushing, being careless, and distracted are all ways unsafe driving occurs. Although it may not seem like a big deal to the driver to go run a yellow at the last second, speed on a highway when late to work, or take five seconds to answer one text, they will feel differently when they affect someone else’s life. So next time you are behind the wheel, take a minute to breathe and think about who you are going to drive.
