Safer Driving Less Tears

The importance of knowledgeable and safe drivers is crucial for all of society. If more people practiced safe driving, the number of deaths on the road each year would surely decrease. The problem is that many either don’t know or do not care to learn about road safety. I am going to explain some ways in which people can make better choices on the road for themselves and for others.

First off, driver education is critical to reducing the number of deaths. Anyone learning to drive takes a driver’s ed course. Through this, they learn about the roads and the importance of not doing certain things while driving. I remember my driver’s ed class showing students videos of brutal crashes and then teaching us ways to avoid them and how to drive smart. This was very smart in hindsight. Having the knowledge of what not to do and what to do while behind the wheel can save many future lives, which is why people should take driver education very seriously to understand the basics.

Driver education instills the importance of understanding traffic laws and regulations. This knowledge helps create a disciplined driving culture where everyone respects the rules of the road. For example, understanding the significance of speed limits, following traffic signals, and knowing when to yield can prevent accidents and save lives. Comprehensive driver education programs cover these aspects thoroughly, ensuring that new drivers are well-prepared to handle various road situations.

In personal experience, I have been in a crash but never a serious one where my car has been totaled. However, my boyfriend has been in a major accident where his car was totaled. It was a very tense call to hear and had me extremely worried. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the car and was just very grateful to have him standing in front of me. The car was totaled but my boyfriend was okay physically, but shaken up from what just happened. The accident was caused by a guy who swerved all the way into his lane leading him to spin out of control. This just goes to show that it can happen to anyone. As I too thought it would never happen to me or someone in my life, it did. This is why everyone should take in the importance of driving safely on the roads.

Moreover, driver education emphasizes the dangers of impaired driving. Whether it’s driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, fatigue, or strong emotions, impaired driving dramatically increases the risk of accidents. Educational programs stress the importance of being in the right mental and physical state to drive, highlighting the severe consequences of impaired driving.

Secondly, steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving include addressing the use of phones, eating, and sleep. We all know that phones are a huge risk nowadays for driving. Many crashes are related to texting and driving. If people put their phones on “Do Not Disturb” while driving, it could lessen the number of times they use their phones in the car, as they will not be distracted by every vibration or notification.

Another important factor is eating and driving. Driving with one hand is not safe, especially when needing to react quickly on the road. Multi-tasking is proven to be unsafe behind the wheel because all of your focus is not on the road nor your surroundings. Therefore, eating should be minimized. It takes only 5-10 minutes to eat, so it’s perfectly fine to park and eat for that time.

Moreover, getting enough sleep is vital. I am a victim of falling asleep behind the wheel. Whether it’s our jobs, early mornings, late nights, or sitting in traffic, we must know ourselves well enough to decide if we are too tired to drive. We should either take a quick nap in the car or get some caffeine. If these aren’t options, rolling down the windows, putting on music that keeps us awake, or making the car cold can help. We are all responsible enough to know if we can drive safely despite sleep concerns.

Adding on, driver education can also play a role in promoting these safe driving habits. By incorporating modules on the dangers of distracted and fatigued driving, educational programs can further reinforce the importance of staying focused and alert on the road. Educators can use real-life examples and statistics to demonstrate the severe consequences of these behaviors, making the lessons more impactful.

Last but definitely not least, is avoiding driving under the influence. Ensure to have a designated driver if you go out or take an Uber home. Ideally, a breathalyzer should be mandatory in every car to prevent starting it under the influence. Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of road fatalities. Stricter laws and enforcement are essential to combat this issue. Additionally, technology can play a pivotal role. For example, ignition interlock devices that require a breath sample before the vehicle can start can prevent impaired individuals from driving.

In conclusion, all these measures alone could significantly reduce the death rate due to driving on the road. Driver education is a powerful tool in reducing road fatalities. By equipping drivers with essential knowledge and skills, promoting safe driving habits, and addressing the dangers of impaired and distracted driving, we can create a safer driving environment for everyone. The collective effort of individuals, communities, and policymakers is crucial in making our roads safer and saving countless lives.
