The Importance of Attending a Driving School

The
Importance of Attending a Driving School

The
current social trend is the push for a younger license age limit. The
provisional license allows adverse effects on our society because
teenagers tend not to have a formal driving education. Therefore, the
Supreme Court must weigh the consequences of young drivers who didn’t
attend a driving school to those who did and pass a law enforcing the
next generations to attend a driving school before getting behind a
wheel in the road.

The
responsibility to drive an automobile is enormous for a teenager.
Cars need attention, such as regularly checking that tires aren’t
flat and changing the oil and oil filters every six months. Most
teenagers are not aware of the responsibility on their shoulders
because they are not taught efficient, safe driving. In fact, most
teenagers are taught how to drive by a family member in their
neighborhood or a parking lot, putting in danger the lives of people.

In
addition, the average car can run 200 miles per hour; therefore, a
wrong turn or speeding cannot only put the driver’s life in danger,
but his/her passengers, people in other cars, and pedestrians. For
example, Jacqui Saburido was an international student from Venezuela
who moved to Texas. In 1999, Jacqui Saburido suffered from
third-degree burns, and two other girls who traveled with her were
killed instantly in a car accident provoked by Reggie Steffi, a drunk
minor. Jacqui’s eyes burned, and her face and fingers melted. After
ten months of coma and 15 surgeries, Jacqui woke up, but her life was
ruined forever. Reggie Steffi was a football player in high school
who went from a football game on Friday to jail on Sunday because of
one reckless decision on a Saturday night after a party. He was found
over the legal limit for alcohol for which he was fined $20,000 and
sentenced to seven years in prison. In one night, two lives were
taken away, and Jacqui’s life was changed entirely because of one
irresponsible teenager who decided to drink and drive (Oprah).

About
one out of four fatal teen car accidents involve underage drinking
and driving, and approximately two out of five teen car crashes occur
between 9 pm to 6 am, according to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. This means that kids drinking and driving at night is
common. Taking into consideration that most teen crashes occur at
night while they are intoxicated is one more point to consider that
they are not ready to be behind the wheel without having formal
education on driving safety guidelines. Car crashes are the number
one cause of death for teenagers, according to the National Vital
Statistics Reports. In 2010, highway researchers found that every day
seven teens die because of a car accident because of a reckless
driver. Still, some people argue that they can teach their teenage
son/daughter how to drive properly. However, if every teenager is
required to drive after a formal driving education, the statistics
for injury crash rates would go down.

Individually,
I am taking action by attending a driving school before getting my
driver’s license and abstinence from traveling with teenage drivers
who didn’t have proper driving education. Most teenagers are
anxious about getting their hands on a car wheel. However, safety
precautions such as teaching them safety guidelines, road laws, and
cars’ technical issues are essential to prevent car accidents and
ultimate death. In sum, the Supreme Court must consider enforcing
teenagers to attend a driving school because they need to be fully
prepared to be behind the wheel before getting onto the road.
